Analysis Of We Need To Talk About Kevin By Lionel Shriver

My novel is called “We Need To Talk About Kevin” by Lionel Shriver. This book is about Eva and all of the events that happened before and after the birth of her son Kevin. My thesis statement is that Eva’s relationship with Kevin was always rocky until Eva realized that the way she acted and treated Kevin was the problem.
Eva accuses Kevin of anything that happens to her. She doesn’t look at the facts that sometimes don’t point to kevin being the culprit of something bad. In the book Eva accuses Kevin of putting bleach the from underneath the sink in Celia’s eye, even though the kitchen sink wasn’t baby proofed and Celia was caught trying to get into the sink. This quote proves that Eva doesn’t listen to the facts that show that Kevin isn’t at fault and it proves that Kevin and Eva have had a bad relationship because of her bad judgement towards Kevin.
She would yell at him for no reason and never think twice about what she was saying. She would tell Kevin all types of things and she thought he didn’t understand a word she was saying. Eva tells Kevin that he had taken all of her freedom away and had made her feel trapped in her own loft. “Mummy was happy before widdle Kevin came awong, you know that don’t you? And now mummy wakes up every day and wishes she were in France. Mummy’s life sucks now, doesn’t mummy’s life suck? Do you know there are some days that mummy would rather be dead? Rather than listen to you screech for one more minute, there are some days that mummy would jump off the Brooklyn Bridge than be with you” (Shriver 106). This quote shows Eva yelling at Kevin telling him all these things saying that she was happier without him around and she would rather be dead than be with him. This connects back to my thesis by showing Eva yelling at Kevin and mistreating him furthering their rocky
