Twenty-century music for Tuba: Analysis and Pedagogy methods of Solo Tuba of the master recital selected repertoire

Chapter 1

Even though the tuba was not known as a solo instrument for another century, the bass tuba in F was created by Wilhelm Friedrich Wieprecht and Johann Gottfried Moritz (1777–1840) in September 1835. It was decided that a big bass instrument was required, to produce low harmonics in the brass family. Since then it has been used as a bass part to support and accompany other instruments; both string and woodwind sections in the orchestra, also in the wind band in European region to replace the ophicleide, an ancient instrument which was popularity used in the orchestra during that time. In 1954, the English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote the “Concerto for Bass tuba” dedicate to the London Symphony Orchestra to perform for the London Symphony Orchestra Jubilee Concert on 13th June 1954 premiered by Philip Catelinet, the principal tuba of London Symphony orchestra that time. Soon later, in 1955, a German composer Paul Hindemith also wrote his “Sonata for tuba and piano” included in his instrumental Sonata series which become a popular Solo tuba repertoire since it written. These two composers are the most effective composer that to make a tuba out standing in the world of western music character. Since that, many composers are following Ralph Vaughan Williams and Paul Hindemith to start to write a solo piece for tuba in both tonal and atonal music or even an unaccompanied piece for solo …show more content…
The variety range of Dynamic, an unaccompanied music for tuba in the 20th and 21st century usually has a wider level of Dynamic rather than in the past. Since then, musical in the modern era, there are highly quality standards concert hall and the musical play venue where able to support with a level difference of sound. Which often differ from the ancient music, where music is usually held inside the home either a smaller venue. 4. With the use of an extended technique, this is the main raw material in unaccompanied music composition in the 20th and 21st century. Due to musical instruments quality is a potential for efficiency higher than early musical instruments make the composer invented new techniques to provide opportunities for players to show more their talent. 5. Interpretation in unaccompanied music, although the composer usually offer guidelines for the players in front of the music sheet, which often explain the method of how to do/perform special techniques in the piece.     Further technological advancements are inevitable in the years to come, but for the first time since it was created, we now have a euphonium close to perfection. Euphonium - Besson Prestige 2005 in 1891, a journalist from the Daily Telegraph suggested the sound of the euphonium was, "enough to make a Quaker kick his mother-in-law" and said that the instrument sounded like a "fog-horn".     Before the clarinet, the first true reed instrument was called the chalumeau, which was used my musicians in the 1600s. Johann Christoph Denner and his son improved the chalumeau by inventing the speaker key. By doing this, he gave the instrument a greater register and he was recognized as the inventor of the clarinet and the predecessor of the chalumeau. Unlike any other woodwind instruments, the clarinet has a cylindrical bore to give its distinct sound. Shortly before 1700, he invented the register key, increasing the range of the chalumeau. This allowed pitches a 12th above the lower register to be produced. The cylindrical shape of the clarinet, combined with a closed ended mouthpiece (unlike the flute) allows the clarinet from producing the even numbered harmonics. This accounts for its unique timbre.     The oboe first appeared during the 17th century. Even though the oboe made its orchestral debut in France in 1657, its earliest ancestral oboe like instruments were first used around 2800 B.C. The closest predecessor of the modern oboe is an instrument also part of the double reed family called the shawm, which dates way back to its creation in the 1200’s. The first baroque oboe made out of boxwood was created in France for the purpose of entertaining the French court. Its name was derived from the French word hautbois meaning “high wood” and is what it was actually referred to when it first emerged. The oboe gained immediate popularity and was found ubiquitous in many countries like Europe and England. By the 1800’s the oboe became an acknowledge member of the orchestra.
