From the text of “Survival is Your Own Responsibility” by Daryl R. Miller it says we “live in urban environments and grow up in urban culture, wilderness skills are never learned.” This is a huge flaw in society. How are we going to survive the wilderness and stay out of dangerous situations if we are not being taught a single thing about survival. Also most people who need to be rescued have no knowledge about how to survive or know what to do in dangerous situations. Another quote from the story “you can not make intelligent decisions in the wilderness if you do not understand the risks”. The people who are rescued misjudge their capabilities and think they can do things they really can’t. They take risks that they think aren’t even risks to them but they soon find out the hard way and end up being rescued. In addition to that another quote states “Accidents stem from a lack of misjudgment and a lack of training”. These accidents sometimes go deadly and who is it to blame. The person being rescued is the one to blame because the reason he is getting rescued is he made a misjudgment and had a lack of training all leading up to the rescue being his fault. There are many reasons why accidents happen. For most of these reasons it is human error. People who put themselves in life or death situations should be held accountable for their actions. True sometimes it isn’t their fault however , the main reason they need to be rescued is because of lack of judgment and no knowledge of survival. If people were to make better decisions and come more prepared when traveling in dangerous areas there would be far less accidents and rescues happening. Although there isn’t a cost for a life, there should be a cost given if they risk the lives of
