Analysis Of Snow White By Andrea Hollander Budy

I liked “Snow White” by Andrea Hollander Budy. It puts an interesting twist to the commonly known fairy tale and introduces a new perspective. Generally, fairy tales focus on children and are made for the sake of entertainment. However, this poem is meant for females, particularly housewives, based on the line “mistaking the footprints of your own / children for those little men?” (9-10). It’s interesting that Snow White’s ‘prince’ is actually the dwarf Bashful, “who still won’t admit it” (3). He seems to be very timid, so she has to take the initiative to make them closer. Instead of being the typical damsel-in-distress or helpless-princess archetype, Snow White is more clever and resolute than her original tale; it promotes strength for females. On the other hand, the audience is distressed
The audience could also be seen as insane and the “magic sleep” is the medication needed to calm their imagination. Snow White’s idea to make up a prince is to discourage other women from making reckless decisions, and to face reality since meeting a prince in real life is a very slim possibility. Finding a prince to whisk them away to a happy ending is impossible, so simply imagining it is better than trying to copy Snow White’s actions. The subject is Snow White, but the theme is ‘don’t copy fairy tale princesses.’
