analysis of adagio for strings by Tiesto
The piece starts with prominent four to the floor bass drum beat for 4 bars.
There are clicks in the background.
After four bars , a synth is introduced for another four bars until a second synthesizer is introduced (0:15).
The build up to the drop then begins. at 0:28, open hi hi hats start playing in the off-beats and long synthesized string chords (lots of reverb) are introduced underneath the dominant synth. (Can hear faint use of flanger).
At 39 seconds, the drum beat drops completely and the synth strings (from Adagio For Strings) are introduced with synth pad underneath. There is heavy reverb on the strings.
Bass kick enters again at 1:16 when the strings disappear, allowing the synths to build up again. the synths are heavily distorted.
Second synth enters again at 1:35.
The synths have the same chord progression as the strings.
Snare drum hits (from 1:54) get louder until 2:12 when the beat drops and the four to the floor bass enters again with the synths on top. The synths are heavily distorted.
The synths continue until the end of the song. After about 2:30, one synth echoes the other.

An iconic example of modal jazz. Improvisation makes up most of the piece, but the riffs from the rhythm section truly set up the soloist for great solos. The exchange between the bass and the rest of the band. The antecedent phrase is played by the bass, which plays a rising line of notes. Following, the piano and or the rest of the band respond with two chords moving downwards in response to the bass. These chords are a whole step apart and consist of the 1, 4th , m 7th , m 3rd , and 5th . The final chord of the phrase ends with a borrowed chord , establishing the harmonic middle of the…

The recorded version starts off with a moderato beat of four beats per meter (or called a quadruple meter). The rhythms through the entire live version match the recorded version perfectly. The only difference is the last guitar solo during the live version; I cannot tell what the meter is and there is no longer a beat, or even a steady beat, once the drums quit playing. The drummer speeds the tempo up dramatically, causing a lot of dissonance.…

I also noticed a little bit of polyphony in there when the chorus started to sing lower and then start to get higher around “He shall reign for ever and ever”. I believe where I detected it, along with the dynamics taking an effect. Then the around the ending the homorhythmic melody came back because of the settings from the trumpets and the timpani setting the mood to complete the performance. I also found out that this would be a SATB chorus, which is a 4-part chorus and…

The sound throughout this scene is mostly non-diegetic, a soundtrack piece, however diegetic sound can be heard in a discussion between Ricky and Shea. Ambient/diegetic sound is noted during the vandalism of Wisdom’s car, as well as laughter and skates from Ricky’s shots. An upbeat track is used to establish a sense of pace to the scene, while keeping up with the action of the sequence.…

Mars is the first movement of the suite and it starts with a bang. A slow, ominous intro begins with the sound of snare drums being played in the background. Soon the horns greet the drums, creating an immediate feeling of danger within the first movement. The powerful tones by the strings section set for a very dramatic, almost inhuman feel, to the movement. It continues to build until it reaches a point and then drops back down, just setting itself up for another build even stronger than the first. The horns then come in utilizing bursts of noise backed by deeper brass instruments. It leaves you…

This movement for the most part seems calm and peaceful. It seems to have two parts prior to the middle of this movement. The first part has cellos and violas and the second part has clarinets. Then the full orchestra plays. Once you get to the middle of this movement you can hear the woodwinds play. At the end of this movement it seems to go back to the main melody theme played by the full orchestra.…

The movie opens with the main title fading in from black accompanied by a light string tone with horns backing them up (with a quick electric guitar when De Niro’s and Pacino’s names appear). This sets the overall tone for the movie presenting more of a serious / dramatic feel. The LA Metro begins to immerge into the background. The music complements the train passing, closely resembling the way Quincy Jones scored the opening of In Cold Blood with the bus passing by. There is a little change to the music when Robert De Niro’s character appears on screen which has a jazz tone that lets the audience know that this is in the city, in this case downtown Los Angeles. The music follows De Niro to an emergency hospital. At this point the music turns more intense with guitar and a prominent bass line moving the action along. There is a use of low strings moving very rapidly in the background that helps push the action along even more as he walks through the E.R. This music carries on when the scene cuts and goes to Val Kilmer making a purchase in a construction yard. The music connects the two characters by carrying over through the scene. It also has an ominous feel…

It’s titled Relaxin with Lee. This song, unlike the Bloomdido’s quick fast paced tempo, has more of a smoother feel to it. Its starts off with a walking bass line by Curley Russel and Buddy Rich on the drums. Charlie Parker then enters on the saxophone gliding right into the melody adding an improvised solo. Following Parkers solo, Gillespie really shows how great of a range of notes he can hit going from high to low back to high. This is something that is different from some of the other tracks on this album. Next is an impressive improvisational solo by Thelonious Monk. One thing that Monk does that stands out the most in his improve: the repetition of the same three notes for an entire eight count. Then at the end of this song Rich plays a powerful bridge, and everyone jumps in to play the last eight count together. This song is a great example of how great these two musicians are and also how much greater they are when they play…

This movement is written in sonata form, which was very common during this era of music. The recapitulation runs from the beginning and ends in bar sixty-eight. The development then occurs and lasts from bar sixty-nine till bar 105. There is then a three bar transitional phrase back to the recapitulation from bar 105 to bar 107. Bar 108 is the beginning of the recapitulation and lasts till the rest of the movement. Although it could be said from bar 175 to the end could form a small coda.…

For this next tutorial, I wanted to have synthesized drums, so I made a basic drum pattern in ultrabeat opened up the ES2 synthesizer. The first thing I did once I had the ES2 synthesizer open was change the default preset to plain sine. Next, shorten the attack significantly. Then, I shortened to the decay to a little less than half, took away all of the sustain, then shortened the release to about 1/6. Then, I changed the settings so that the pitch will be modulated by envelope 2. After, I turned on the filter and set the drive to about 0.10 to give some realistic harmonics. Finally, I set the sine level up a bit to give a bit more of a bass sound and voila! The perfect synth percussion to add to a d&b or rap track.…
