An Example of Perseverance in Sports
For most people, winning is harder than losing, but in a sport as competitive as wrestling that is not the case. There is a lot of pressure put on you to be the best you can be, and that's why I like it so much. I was never really a great athlete, so when the opportunity came up to join the wrestling team when I was a freshman, I was a little skeptical. My first few weeks on the team were challenging; I couldn't beat anyone at practice, and I couldn't bench press much. My self-esteem took a big hit those first few weeks. After a while I started to enjoy it though.

I never liked having to stay after school for wrestling, but I never liked to start something without finishing it. Luckily for me my coach asked me if I wanted to join wrestling again as a sophomore, it would be the first year we would have an in-school program and I excitedly said yes. The summer passed quickly and I started school again. I had a fresh start this time, and I had a bunch of friends at practice. The wrestling season started up, and although I still wasn't exactly up to par with any state champions, I still had a lot of fun.

Time came for the district tournament. I was pretty confident but still nervous at the same time. The next day we arrived at the school where the tournament was being held. My first match didn't go so well, the other wrestler ended up beating me by one point, we never got close to pinning each other. I had a lot of time in between my next match, so I thought about what I was going to do, and I decided that I was going to do whatever it took to win. The referee called my name over the speaker and I got ready for my next match. I walked onto the mat and shook the other wrestler's hand, and the match started. A few minutes went by and I could hear all my friends shouting "go go go!" which was a great energy boost. I ended up pinning the guy in the last period. It was a great feeling when the ref raised my hand. At the end of the day I was glad that I didn't quit when

Wrestling is tough, it is a sport much from its participants, but if one has the courage to step out on the mat dressed in a uniform that leaves a little imagination and challenge another human to a match to see who the better man is. Danger can be found in every sport, and wrestling are no more prone to injury’s to soccer, football, track stars, lacrosse. Wrestling creates a sense of accountable for one’s actions. Those that work hard, succeed. There is no one to hide behind; every flaw and mistake is brought forth in a match. It takes a great deal of mental toughness and sacrifice nights with friends for extra practice and consideration, favorite food to lose the extra pound, and sleep when one needs to wake up at 4am to go for a run before school begins. That competitive nature of clashing with another human being creates a sense of community within the wrestling world. Those that have never participated in the sport have a tough time understanding this. Opponents’ must shake hands before and after, showing respect for the other fighter, win or lose. It is uncommon to see administration in the form of an embrace even after one has lost a tough battle. These values are created through combative sports, and stay with a wrestle for the remainder of their…

It was a saturday at Iowa Western, middle schoolers ran last so it was a long wait. Then when I got up there at the start line, the grass was cut short and the sun was bright, it was super quiet as he was getting ready to shoot the gun, I was never so nervous, I don't know why but I thought there’s no way I can do this it’s not gonna happen, but it did. I didn’t do that good but I finished and that’s all I cared about. As the season went on I had my doubts as of wether I could do it or not finish another meet go through another…

Beating something can require perseverance in many different ways. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is taken from his cozy home and put on a sled dog team. He fights with the lead dog, Spitz, often, until one time Buck finally beat him in a fight. On the other hand, my Gram went to college and took a speech class. She was afraid of speaking in front of a large group of people, so she used perseverance to help her control her decisions. While Buck and Gram are different, they were both afraid at one point and both beat a fear they had. Both Gram and Buck had to experience something new, whether it was fighting with another dog or going to college and talking in front of people.…

It was the middle of the summer and I was playing baseball in Jackson, Mississippi. I was playing for the Goodlettsville All-Stars. We were playing in the little league 10u world series. To get to the championship we had to win 8 games and it was single elimination. We had won 7 out of 8 games and we were playing our 8th game and it was the bottom of the third and I was playing left field. In the second inning I was felling drowsy so my dad gave me a Snickers and a Red Bull. I was for sure not drowsy anymore. I could feel the sugar rushing through my veins and I was on the balls of my feet waiting for the pitch to be thrown. When my pitcher threw the ball I had my hand in my glove ready for the ball if it was hit to me. WHAM! The ball was hit so far up in the air it looked like it hit the sun. When I realized that the ball was coming to me I was way too far back so I had to run as fast as I could and dive for the ball. I jumped as far as I could and stretched as far as I could. I barely caught it by snow coning the ball. Everybody was so proud of me that the screamed as loud as they could. We went on to win the game 4-1. The next day I woke up, jumped out of the bed, and put my uniform on. I was so excited, I was in the championship! I…

One day my coach pulled me to the side and told me I was going to be the quarterback for the game. I thought I was going to die! I never played quarterback so I was very nervous about messing up. I instantly became sick and thought about leaving the game. My mom was on the sideline, so I went over to her and told her about me being afraid to throw the ball. My mom grabbed me by the shoulders and told me to fight my fear, and focus on being the best quarterback the team ever saw. I turned around, got in the game, they passed me the ball, and I threw the ball directly…

I was seeded 7th out of 21 kids. I had to wrestle a very tough kid my first match. Considering this was my first match of the district tournament, the nerves kicked in. My full potential was not shown in my first match and I walked away with a loss. The tournament wasn’t over and I had to keep my head up even though I knew losing again wasn’t an option. After an hour or so went by, it was time for my second match. The kid I had to wrestle wasn’t ranked and had a losing record so I assumed I could win. I went in with a positive mindset and came out victorious. I pinned him with 27 seconds left in the first period. With that win, I move on to the second day of the tournament. When the first day of wrestling is over, you have to option to weigh out that night or weigh in the next morning. I really wanted to eat that night so I chose to weigh out. Little did I know I was 4 pounds over. So after an hour of running I made weight and was able to eat that night. Laying in bed that night, I knew that tomorrow could be my last day wrestling all year. I had to give it my all. The next morning, we left the wrestling complex at 5:45 so we could be there by 7. Everyone slept the whole way there. After we all checked in, it was time to start warming up. I got a good sweat going in the warm up and felt confident. At about ten o’clock, it was time for my first match. I wrestled hard and walked away with the win. If I won my next match, I was going to the state wrestling…

I had a rough draft made, but I decided it didn't go with how I was feeling with everything going on. I decided to write the paper that would prove to my mother why I should continue to do wrestling. I had many ideas that I wrote down like quotes that apply, but I didn't realize till after I wrote the ideas down, that I was wasting too much time thinking of what to write than actually typing the paper. I thought about the people that made me realize that I want to continue to wrestling. I got the sense of why wrestling can help me learn things that I can use for the future. "It's that kind of sport where you look in the mirror and you either see a winner or a loser" I was told from a wise man I met at a wrestling match. Learning to be confident is part of winning or losing a match. Usually whoever put more hours of work into wrestling, it's a most guaranteed win. But everybody makes mistakes and that's when part of confidence comes in. Wrestling teaches many things that other sports doesn't always. I think it's one of the hardest, but most rewarding sports anyone can participate in. "Always improving" my coach always tells me. Like in writing my teacher explains, "It's never finished; it's just due." I'm starting to fathom how wrestling applies to many things in…

In seventh grade I wanted to tryout for volleyball. I was very nervous because I had never played it before. I was super happy when I found out all my friends and I made the team. We had a lot of practices in December to get ready for games in January. I was really nervous for our first game. Our first game was supposed to be right after christmas break ended, but we had a snow day so it was cancelled. I wished it hadn’t been so I could just get it over with, but i was gonna have to wait. We were scheduled for another game later that week. I woke up with a phone ringing and an answering machine saying that school was cancelled due to boiler issues. I sat in bed thinking I had once again gotten lucky and we had no game, I was wrong. We were…
