Amy Gumm's Character In 'The Grapes Of Wrath'

The main protagonist is Amy Gumm. She is a girl from Kansas and she hates it there. Her mom is never there to take care of her and a girl named Madison always bullies her. Her life was disappointing, boring and tough. Amy always managed on her own somehow but she wanted to get away. Far away! One day she was sitting in her trailer like any other day but the suddenly off the ground and floating in mid air. She passed out in the middle but when she woke up, she was in the magical land of Oz. She arrived in Oz due another tornado. Amy is an interesting character. She is courageous, a quick thinker, intelligent and also kind and caring. Later on she meets Mombi and joins the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. Through the Order she learns about
Grandma Gert had gotten fond of Amy as well. Grandma Gert died while trying to save Amy from the Lion. Even as she died Grandma Gert made sure Amy undertood how important it was to destroy Dorothy and she muttered an incantation to protect Amy. She disintegrated and the magic she once had in her body was returned to where it came from, Oz. Amy was devastated. In this land Grandma Gert cared for Amy and acted like a mother to her. “ ‘You have to do something,’ I croaked at Nox, tears streaming down my cheeks.” (Paige 244) Even though Amy always tried to act tough on the outside, internally she was a very soft and loving child.
Amy’s physical appearance changes along with her capability to do magic. In the beginning Amy is described to look a little plain but when she joins the order Glamora gives Amy a makeover by enhancing her natural beauty. Then she is described to have beautiful eyes and rosy cheeks. Her face was just enhanced but on the other hand, her hair color was completely changed. When the makeover was over she had pink hair!
