Amigo Brothers By Piri Thomas
Euripides said, “Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in happiness”. This means that real friends show their love and support in bad times not good times. The words of Euripides connects with the story of “Amigo brothers” because Antonio and Felix was there for each other even though they had to fight against each other. They support each other no matter what. The theme of “Amigo brothers” by Piri Thomas illustrates that friendship is stronger than a competition because a real bond is for life, it gives you more things than a bout and you would not find a bond like that.
Antonio and Felix were very close friends. Tony and Felix know each other since they were little kids. Their friendship has lasted a long time, they even practiced

Politician, Hubert Humphrey once said, “The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it”. Friendship is a very important aspect of life. Friendship gives the opportunity to escape from loneliness, to have someone be there in a time of need, to give support when mistakes are made, and allow an escape from reality when you’re feeling blue (Whitbourne). In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization and conflict to help develop the theme that friendship is one of the most important aspects to live life to the fullest extent.…

Friendship is a very important bond shared by two friends that cannot be described by mere words. In the fictional narrative The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton shows us the importance of friendship through the hardships of the two protagonists, Johnny and Ponyboy. They use their friendship to overcome many obstacles throughout their story. One example of friendship can be found in the movie “Toy Story,” in which the main protagonists, Woody and Buzz, must find their way back home while at the same time gain each other’s trust and friendship. Friends will always support your side in an argument, they look out for you, and comfort you when you are in need.…

In the book, Bad Boys, Ann Arnett Ferguson goes on a three-year journey through Rosa Parks Elementary School to observe and research why it is that mostly black males are ending up in jail and are unsalvageable from such a young age. She interviews and observes daily interactions with the eleven and twelve year old students that have been labeled “at risk” by their teachers and peers. She wants to research how it is being in school when all of the educators have already labeled them as “unsalvagable, at risk, and bound for jail”. These kids pretty much act in the way that their teachers treat them. They get into trouble every single day and most of the times these boys provoke it because that’s how they think there supposed to act because they think they are already going no where in life. At such a young age, these boys, just because they are black, shouldn’t be criminalized and put in a different category than other boys. These children faced many challenges that effected how they learned in school, the way teachers and peers treated them, and how they are labeled as bad boys. Ann Arnett Ferguson said, “in the course of my study it became clear that school labeling practices and the exercise of rules operated as part of a hidden curriculum to marginalize and isolate black male youth in disciplinary spaces and brand them as criminally inclined”(page 2). This means that the educators didn’t really realize they were doing this and labeling these boys but it was more like a tradition and they saw nothing wrong with it. This is purely based on race and obviously some people are still in the mindset that black people are inferior to white people. Bad boys show black males from a very young age being adultified and become very masculine making them becomes part of the criminal system early on.…

A long time ago the difference between perception and reality was defined as the act of understanding in contrast to the act of being real. Reality could be tricky; most of us including myself depending on scenarios of our lives tend to give in to ideas which are not applicable to reality as a whole. The best example of this is written in the short story “All Over” by Guy de Maupassant. In which his main character Lormerin is very self conscious and narcissistic also Lise de Vance, a former old love plays a big role in hurting Lormerin ego and opening his eyes by showing him, his real self. Many would say that when reality knocks it could be harsh and confusing. In the next couple of paragraphs I want to show how my understanding of reality can be applied to the short story previously mentioned. Every day life brings so many unexpected moments of which we dream of but never really happen, this is where we draw the line for reality and perception of a perfect to be situation. Reality is in the eyes of the beholder and no one can really change that, all of us are born dreamers. When things get out of hand and reality hits, this is where people suffer. Why do we suffer? We suffer because we give too much or expect too much and not everyone has the same ideals when returning the favor. Also, some events might be trifling to some but extremely important to others.…

I think that the author’s message is that friends can be found in the most unlikely places. For example, Zebra becomes friends with a strange man off the streets that turn out to be his art teacher! I bet before Zebra would have never thought that he would become friends with a stranger off the streets. But this goes to show that friends can be found anywhere, at anytime, and it can be anyone.…

Friendship is a virtue or at least involves virtue. Friendship is always a special thing but people tend to forget about how much its value is. Friendship is not just necessary, but also noble.Friendship consists of goodwill between two people. You can only have a few friends being that its take some precious time to build a real friendship. Aristotle’s speaks about how there are three kinds of friendship. The first is friends of utility, where both people receive some benefit from each other. Aristotle believed that this is the type of friendship that is for the old. Aristotle argued that they “are at such a time of life pursue not what is pleasant but what is beneficial.” The second is friends of pleasure, where both people are attracted to each other, good looks, or other their pleasant qualities all together . aristotles says this friendship is for the young. Aristotle argues that the young because “...quickly become friends and quickly stop...” and “...love and stop loving quickly...” The third is friends of excellence, where both people admire the other’s excellence and help one another strive for excellence. Aristotle says this about friends of excellence “...complete sort of friendship between people who are good and alike in virtue...”friends of virtue or excellence is hard to come by especially in the world we live in today because it is so much individualism. According to Aristotle the first two friendships are accidental, because in these case friends are only thinking about their own utility and pleasure, not are going to change over a period of time. If a friendship is based on excellence it will be a long lasting relationship, because excellence is a quality. This kind of friendship is the one everyone wants to have and it overlooks the other two friendships. This kind of friendship though is hard to find and takes a lot of time to progress but it is worth it. It is nothing like having a real and true friend. Friends who want the same thing will…

    Embrace by Billy Collins

The most effective way for a poem to speak to the reader is by using a way of indirectly representing an image or an event. When the poet uses a filter, or a metaphor, he makes a figurative instead of a literal reference. Taking a look at Billy Collins’ poem, “Embrace” it is easy to think that the whole message from beginning to end is that this person was feeling lonely enough to hold himself. He is a little over the edge, and since there is no one around to embrace him, he has resorted to embracing himself. That is what the poem is about, a temporary condition of emptiness and one man’s Band-Aid. But it also suggests a bigger point about human nature and an individual’s perspective about life. It is normal to be uncertain about your particular condition, but a pattern of acting out in unconventional ways can sometimes drive a person crazy.…
