American Red Cross Community Service
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” This quote by Oliver Wendall Holmes can be applied to numerous situations in our lives. Throughout my whole life, I rarely ever did community service. Though I went to nursing homes and sang carols during Christmas, I really never considered it to be true volunteer work. I was usually too busy to have any spare time to volunteer and when I did have spare time, volunteer work was never the first thing on my mind. Volunteering last Wednesday, however, did stretch my mind. Because this was my first instance of true volunteer work, everything about it was a new experience. I chose to volunteer to work the table at the blood drive at the Recreational Center because I’ve donated blood before and feel that it is very helpful and necessary to the process of saving lives. Working “behind the scenes” of the blood drive was different though. By sitting there and helping out the donors and handing out snacks afterwards, I got to see the donor community in a different way. Not only that, but a lot of times, I found it to be my responsibility to assure donors that the process was quite easy and painless. Many people came in looking unsure about whether or not they would really donate and these were the people I spent the most time talking to. My “old dimensions” were the thoughts that blood drives just easily happened; people showed up, they donated and that was all that was to it. Volunteering at the blood drive helped me better understand that things like this wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t people to volunteer at them and help everything run smoothly. By my mind being stretched by this experience, I’ve learned that even only helping out for a few hours can go a long way. I feel so much differently about volunteer work now; instead of it being a burden that I’ve been “sentenced to”, it is actually an easy way to give back to the community. On the day of the blood drive, I collected

For some reason, I always go into things with a negative perspective, it’s somewhat of a defense mechanism. My experience as a UCSF Mission Bay Volunteer completely diminished this defense mechanism. At first, I questioned volunteering at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital. I questioned if delivering newspapers and hot beverages would have any effect on patients. I was also scared and sad by the thought of being in the hospital each week and seeing how sick and upset people are. The main reason I wanted to become a volunteer was to gain an experience in the medical field. Little did I know, I would gain a lot more from being a UCSF volunteer. I never really thought I would form relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.…

Beforehand, I was the kid that never initiated conversations and frankly, meeting new people made me uncomfortable. However, as an active member of my community, my shell of awkwardness and seclusiveness slowly broke down with every service event that I was a part of. I waited for the first time in Freshman year during a charity dinner and the gratitude I received back was quite astounding to me. They all shook my hand, had bright smiles, and one man specifically thanked me for making his night. While my guests experienced joy through my waiting, I experienced likewise from their response. Instead of a risk for an embarrassing situation, I realized that helping people brought me genuine…

I had a very difficult on Tuesday (the day before I volunteered). I work at a community site for the OB clinical rotation. Many of the women I work for have limited resources, are living in poverty, and struggle every day. My day consisted of helping three patients: one with postpartum depression, one in a terrible domestic violence situation, and another who had a miscarriage. Spending time with these women, while they were crying and explaining their situation was extremely difficult. After I had come home, I felt exhausted and in pain because I felt their suffering. A few hours after I had come home, Donald trump was elected president. My social media was filled with anger, sadness, and hate towards one another. When I woke up on Wednesday,…

I’m going to be honest, graduating from High School and then from College into the real world. I wouldn't have thought a whole lot of giving back and participating in Community Service as an adult. But knowing what I know now, I plan to not only give back money to held fund cancer research, but give back my time and efforts to different projects that are planned throughout my life. It was a rural development project initiated by our school in the village of Onde. We had to build a bund (a small scale dam). We had to dig mud, Fill it in the sacks, stitch the sacks and then carry the sacks to the lake to build the bund. It was the first time ever that I was doing such work. We had to work for about 7 hours on the first day. The two main things I did on day 1 was carrying the sacks to the river and digging out mud. Both were very intensive and I had to do a lot of arduous work. We had to make and put in place about 800 sacks over a few days in order to build the bund. This very fact that we had to do so much fascinated me as time passed by that day. After we wrapped up the work for that day we headed up to the place where we were going to stay. It was apparently a resort. As it was set in the rural surrounding the resort did not provide many facilities. There were just 2 large rooms provided for our stay. The place wasn’t so hygienic and importantly they had no proper bathrooms and yes, there were two of them but they were extremely dirty and there about 17 people had to use it. This according to me was the moment when I was totally out of my comfort zone. We had to do physical work the whole day, the sanitation wasn’t so good, I didn’t have a proper place to take a shower in, the food there was not very palatable. I wondered why I was there, what came into my mind was “I’m not here for pleasure. Instead I am here for the sake of the many villagers who suffer from the lack of water. I realised I needed to place others before self. I thought no matter how tired I am no matter how bad this place is I am going to enjoy every bit. We went to work the next day. This time I felt motivated, still as the day passed on I started to wear off. I tried my hand at stitching but I learnt I wasn’t so good at that. So I went back to do physical work. By the…
