Amendment Essay Thomas Jefferson once claimed, “A democracy cannot be both ignorant and free.” This is why I believe that the first amendment is the most important amendment to the American people. It states that we have the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition; meaning, we are allowed to voice our opinions, choose what religion we want to follow. As people, we have natural rights, meaning God given rights that the government cannot take away from us. These include freedom of speech, religion, and freedom to own property. The First Amendment is very important to America. If it weren’t for this amendment, America wouldn’t be itself. I believe that the first amendment is the most important one in the Bill of Rights. It is used in almost every current issue. If we did not have the first amendment, we could not freely voice our beliefs about God, which ties into our freedom of religion. Also, we have the freedom to assembly, which is the freedom to hold rallies or meetings in public places. Another important part to the first amendment is the freedom of petition. The right to petition is being able to speak out about government or anything you believe is not right. The government cannot punish you nor do anything to you if you say anything bad about them. Freedom of speech is probably the most important article of the first amendment. Without our freedom of speech, we wouldn’t be allowed to say anything about our political leaders. Like in some countries, it is against the law to speak bad about their political leaders. For example; in North Korea, if someone heard you say anything about their leader, the police would come and invade your home or worse you would have to go to a labor camp or even death. So as Americans, we should all be thankful for the first amendment to protect us.
