the region we know as Mexico had something like papel picado before the Spanish came it was called amatl. the Aztecs had their own why of making papel picado which was the amatl or the amate as the Spanish called it. they would have bark from trees and have melted rubber on them. they would them in ancient games or in their religious beliefs. they would use obsidian knives to make ceremonial cuts in the paper. they would even make certain types of cuts to certain gods and goddesses and make them into banners. what happen to the amate is that it is used in painting
