The project helped increase my knowledge of unknown allusions that writers make in their stories. The strenuous component during the project was discovering allusions. For example, The Fountain of Youth is believed to be a spring that has the ability to restore the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in the water. I found one connection, the use of botox and bodily

An allusion is a brief reference to a well-known person, event, or place both real and imaginary. In Dante’s Inferno – Canto V, one allusion present is Sammu-Ramat, also known as Semiramis. “Her appetite for lust became so flagrant, that she made lewdness licit with her laws, to free her from the blame her vice incurred. She is Semiramis, whose story reads that, as his wife, she succeeded Ninus, controlling the country now ruled by the sultan.” (Lines 55-60)…

The allusion is one of the many ways the author developed his characters into bad guys. The opening paragraph of the story paints a picture wit the first sentence. There was a time when courtesy and winning ways went out of style when it was good to be bad when you cultivated decadence like the taste (Boyle 687). I used the literary term Allusion because of the underlining tone of the character’s true selves as you read further where only portrayed to be bad guys. The story spoke of how the characters drove great distances looking for something bad to get into. It was almost as if they needed something bad to happen so they could have a chance to insert themselves into the matter and come out the victorious. More of a vetting process to prove the extent of their bad nature. In a twist of the…

Allusions were used sporadically by Bradbury to help the reader use printed word to paint mental images. They can be defined rather simply, as they are merely a reference to a historical or contemporary, person, place, event, or work of literature, but they can help the story flow nonetheless. The first allusion was encountered when Montag approached the woman with books in “The Hearth and the Salamander” and she quoted ‘“‘Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.’”’ (Bradbury 33) It was later explained by Beatty that it was a reference to a man named Latimer, who said it “‘... to a man named Nicholas Ridley, as they were being burnt alive at Oxford… on October 16, 1555.’”…

In the twelfth chapter of Thomas C. Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Foster analyzes symbols, and the great influences they have in literature. To begin the chapter, Foster compares and explains the differences between symbols and allegories. Symbolism is a broad category, and allegories fit under it’s immense hierarchy. Furthermore, symbols “involve a range of possible means and interpretations”, while allegories have single and specific answers (105). Foster continues by stating that symbols are personal and can differ from person to person based on their backgrounds, lifestyles and beliefs. Due to the fact that symbols don’t possess one exact answer, every reader has the freedom to “emphasize various elements to differing degrees” (110). These differences allow the story to become more personal and connected to the reader’s life, possibly giving them a deeper understanding of the text because the variations require the reader “to bring something of ourselves to the encounter” (107).…
