Alligator: Text Lamb
Sudat Khan 1/24/15
7224 English Can Humor Give People Life Lessons? By: Sudat Khan Class: 7224 The texts “Alligator” by Bailey White and “Lamb to the Slaughter” By Roald Dahl are texts that use humorous techniques. The text “Alligator’ is about a girl whose Aunt Belle bonds with an alligator. Throughout the text, Aunt Belle goes to the pond where the alligator lives and they both stare at each other. Suddenly, one day the alligator stops appearing in the pond. The text “Lamb to the Slaughter” is about wife and husband that talk about an important topic. The wife becomes shocked of what she hears and so, she kills her husband with a leg of lamb. These texts both convey serious messages about life by using humor. To begin with, the theme of the text “Alligator” is to make most of what you have. According to the text it states “The day came when she could just walk down to the pond and lookout across the water” (1). This quote explains that Aunt Belle just stared at an alligator doing nothing. Soon the alligator would stop appearing in the pond. The theme of the text “Lamb to the Slaughter” is being sly and cunning and get you out of trouble. In the text it states “At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb and brought it down as hard as she could….how clear her mind became all of a sudden. She began thinking very fast” (2). This quote shows how she killed her husband. She starts to think of ways to get out of trouble and she succeeds.
Pursuing this further, both humorous texts have a similar humorous technique. The technique they both use is to present an illogical, inappropriate or improper situation. In the text “Alligator” it says “The alligator would swell up. He would lift his head, arch his tail, and bellow” (1). This quote shows the illogical situation as the alligator bellowing. This is a very rare thing to

The short stories “Young Goodman Brown”, by Nathanial Hawthorne, and “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allen Poe, use dramatic irony more than any other type of irony. They both use symbols, imagery, and foreshadowing to connect to mostly dramatic irony that reveals to characters in the stories having evil intentions. However, these literary devices and ironic situations also lead to different items in each short story.…

In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the author uses dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and situational irony to hold the reader’s interest throughout the story. Theses literary devices make the story more entertaining and put pictures in the reader’s head. Without literary devices stories would not be as entertaining and the reader would…

The main theme i believe to be in this story is slavery because the majority of the book discusses the issues within the community of ex-slaves and how they are trying to get their lives together. “That’s really funny!” That phrase may bring back memories that are associated with happiness. High comedy comes in more forms than just sophisticated jokes, it also involves elements such as wit, wordplay, sarcasm, puns, hyperboles, and allusions. The two most important elements of high comedy allusions and wordplay are used by many comedians, television shows, and literature. Allusions and wordplay are important elements because they require the audience to think about what is said, keeping them engaged and amused. Through all of these examples, the universal truth of not judging a book by it’s cover is addressed.…

Part of why I enjoy whimsical fiction novels so much is because their wit and fantasy hook me into a narrative which I incorporate into my view of the world. Robert Rankin’s The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse is crude, dark, and filled with humor that ranges from highly inappropriate to downright weird. Stepping into the novel’s grim, oddball world required a shift in mindset as a reader. I learned to love unlovable characters, make sense of a nonsensical murder mystery plot, and, most importantly, enjoy myself. I may not have digested the complexity of real life events when I read such novels, but I learned to work backwards. Instead of bringing previous knowledge and complicated feelings into a novel, I left all that at the door, and siphoned off the characters’ dark humor and unconventional world views back into my life. Fantasy and far-fetched fiction will always be dear to my heart because they provide a true give-and-take relationship; I find myself leaving a Harry Potter book or swashbuckling pirate adventure like Cinnamon and Gunpowder equipped with a sharper eye for the odd, humorous, and…

The theme of "Animal Farm" is implied. Throughout my reading, and from what I have read about the book, it is safe to know that the book moves on a parallel with the Russian revolution, and the events afterwards. With that said, the theme is power. Power is constantly shifting throughout the story in some form. In the beginning we are met with the power of Mr. Jones and Old Major. Later on, the power shifts from Mr. Jones and Old Major to all of the animals. The entire story revolves around this pattern of the importance of power. Power, in Animal Farm, allows one group of animals control the others, and manipulate the rules. As well, no matter where you are in the story, power is playing some role or influence on a main…

The first use of irony is arguably the most humorous, which foreshadows the ridiculousness of the narrators actions throughout the story. It also defines the narrators desire for female acquaintance. He wanted a female so badly, not a divorced mother in her thirties, that he would do it seemed almost anything to get one. If it was not clear when Alena’s dog Alf, peed on him and he didn’t care, then it is even more clear when he decides to be a vegan, like her. If you had taken work off to spend a day alone on the beach and a woman’s dog walked over and peed on you, don’t you think you’d be angry at her? As a reader, we expected him to be angry, and when he wasn’t. It was clear how badly he wanted to be with her, and that he wouldn’t stop at much to achieve his goal. It didn’t take Alena long to rope the narrator into her lifestyle. In fact, it took her one night. The next morning he was up protesting with her and her friends. That is, until he got knocked out. Yet, this didn’t phase him. First he gets peed on by a dog, next he gets knocked out. for a guy who grew up eating meat, this is where one should wonder if this girls really worth it.…

A theme is one word summing up the story. The meaning of the story is the overall lesson. For example, the theme of "Red Riding Hood is deception. The meaning of the story is to never talk to strangers. It is evident that the theme of "Zlateh the Goat" is trust and loyalty. As right-thought and self-sacrifice go for "the King of Mazy May". The message of "Zlateh the Goat” is that in many cases in time of need, pets help their owners through depression, loneliness and even at times have been known to save their lives. However, the message of "the King of Mazy May" is doing what is right. Obviously, the message of the two stories is very, very…
