In Smash Mouth’s “All Starts,” a loser recalls others doubting his competence and intelligence. Then, he talks about a sequence of random descriptions of his life; being annoyed with rules, starting something new with enthusiasm, having a hedonistic philosophy. These presumably occurred in the persona’s adolescence as he sounds immature compared to when he later encourages listeners with confidence. For example, he advises to take the “back streets” since we’ll never know that we’ll be successful if we didn’t try it. There are many vague moments in the song that are unclear whether he’s talking in first, second, third person; regardless, I believe it paints a clear picture. All in all, it’s about a man — whose future was believed to be futile — has proved his skeptics wrong by eventually becoming a “rockstar”. …show more content…
The persona is saying that he wasn’t smart— that he was stupid.
“I hit the ground” is another idiom, but not well known. It usually means to start an activity or venture with excitement, which is probably what he means.
“Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb” personifies your brain and head with intellectual ability. This indicates that though you might be smart, you can lack some common sense.
The proverb in “All that glitters is gold” contradicts Shakespeare’s quote “All that glitters is not gold”. That version means that not everything that looks valuable turns out to be so. This conveys the opposite, that everything that looks valuable, is valuable; maybe suggesting that every dream is worth pursuing.
The proverb in “Only shooting stars break the mold” is the persona telling people to be differentiate themselves from others to be successful.
There’s a hyperbole in “The ice we skate is getting pretty thin The water's getting warm so you might as well swim” as he is stating that the ice is melting so much that you can swim in

“Nothing Gold Can Stay” means that nothing perfect can stay. In life, the best things are the ones that don’t last forever. The most beautiful things in life are the things that have the shortest life. In the poem, it says "Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold”, this means that the most beautiful color of nature is gold, but it also is the hardest color to last. In the book when Johnny refers to “Nothing Gold Can Stay” he is telling Ponyboy to stay with all that innocence that they had in their childhood. When the Greasers were small, they were innocent, but when they grew to adults, they became less innocent, violent, mean, rule breakers, etc… So what Johnny wants is that Ponyboy doesn’t become violent, mean, rule breaker,…

“To emphasize the work seems to involve severing it from those who actually read it,…” (23). If all the focus would be on just the text of the literature, then it’s easy to say we are doing nothing more than ignoring the context and reducing the analytical explanations of literature; making them into a set of rhetorical devices. Brooks, throughout his essay, explained how he was attacked multiple times for his use of New Criticism but he does commiserate those who would “recommend brighter, more amateur and more human criticism” (25). Much like with poetry, ignoring the context means we would be ignoring the emotional effects it would bring towards the readers. With these disadvantages, there would be limitations with the theory.…

“All conflict in literature is, in its simplest form, a struggle between good and evil”-Anon. From what the reader can understand from previous knowledge (of reading literature) most conflicts are based on the fight between good and evil. For instance, in a book entitled Before we Were Free by Julia Alvarez, there is one main character name Anita, and her family, her mom, her dad, her sister- Lucinda all live in family compound with an American family called the Washburn’s (Has one daughter and on son). Anita’s family and the Washburn's live in the Dominican Republic. At the time the Dominican Republic was under a dictatorship by a ruler name Trujillo and was known as El Jefe. This dictatorship is currently over in the Dominican Republic, however in other parts of the world it is not over yet. Currently, North…

As readers and viewers, we use our knowledge to decipher the underlying message that comes across throughout works of art. Our Town by Thornton Wilder has many people with several diverse opinions sharing their ideas about the play. Thornton Wilder’s purpose for writing Our Town was to show the amount of control human beings have over their life, but fail to recognize until death. Rhetorical tools within a narrative are very important. They help set the stage so the reader can understand the story from the author’s perspective. A narrative is structured so the reader can see things clearly. The structure contains the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction has a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a sentence that states the main point of the narrative. The introduction will clarify the main points the writer will make throughout the body of the narrative. The body is where the narrative unfolds. The use of cause and effect helps the story transition from one part to the next. Cause and effect is another way for…

The world is full of writers of all kinds: novelists, biographers, copy writers, and even bloggers. Every so often, one of those writers will rise above the rest and become a great author—but what exactly does that take? Many qualities have to come together in one person to make his or her writing great, so having the idea for a story alone is not enough; great writers also have to possess talent and originality as well as the dedication required to see a story through to the end.…

The aforementioned quote is a proverb that one can reflect on as one of the greatest accomplishments one should possess. In order to stand out in a world full of conformity, one must exude characteristics of being exceptional, unique, and different, all synonyms that essentially have a base meaning of individuality. In American modern society, accomplishments such as obtaining an undergraduate degree were once scarce, now this accomplishment is considered by most to be standard. With each passing year, to get an entry level position in today’s job market is more competitive than ever due to this increase in the amount of people with undergraduate degrees. A Bachelor of Science or Arts degree now has the same value of a High School Diploma, and having a Masters degree is now considered as the standard to attain a decent position.…

    Essay on Stupidity

From the point of a frustrated and confused member of the social order, it appears to me that we are living in a society where stupidity easily fits into a simple, three tier, hierarchical model. Where Darwin argued that species adapt, I would argue that--at least where "civilized" culture is concerned--humanity's intellectual evolution is rapidly decreasing, therefore allowing us as a whole to adapt to a culture where the art of thinking is becoming obsolete. This author submits to you that, due to technology and volumes of procedure protocol having been written for every job imaginable, people have lost their ability to reason intellectually and have essentially "dumbed down." This, my friends, is the curious but sad truth of the matter. Therefore, I believe that stupidity can be reasonably fitted into the following three tier, hierarchical model.…
