3. Al Amerat Landfill site:
The landfill site is located in al Amerat in Muscat Governorate and it is considered as the first of his kind in Oman, as it was the first engineered sanitary landfill. The project was designed in 2001 to. Cell 1 construction started in 2005 till 2011 when the operation started along with the closing of old dumpsites. In 2014, award of the second phase construction and operation was announced. The landfill has a capacity of 1000000 m3 void volume to filling, as cell 1 was designed to accommodate 250,000 tons of waste per year and the expected lifetime of cell 1 is around 4 years. The actual quantity of waste which landfill is receiving is approximately 292,000 tons per year. Thus raised the need to design cell 2

All of those data are recorded to keep a clear track of the environmental situation of the site. In case of any leachate is detected, the landfill management prepared a backup plan to treat it by one of the following methods: a lagoon, 2 successive aeration basins for maximal COD/BOD5 and NH4-N reduction, an anaerobic pond, Ultrafiltration for retention of biomass, a membrane bioreactor, and a reverse Osmosis (RO) plant for removal of non- biodegradable COD- …show more content…
Landfills are more environmental friendly when comparing to opendump sites, as the waste disposal process is controlled in a more professional way to decrease the possible environmental impact of waste disposal. As the landfill doesn’t attract pest, doesn’t emit odors or gases if it was designed properly. And the most important thing is that landfills have protection liners that prevent leachate from contamination with water table. One of the advantages of landfills is that they can be reclaimed safely if they were properly capped and operated. Though landfills aim to control the impact of disposed waste, but the can induce it if the site wasn’t designed or operated properly.
