Aha Moments In The Classroom
This is not really a “aha moment” but a reflective gauge for me, Off Track (Witter, 2013, p. 217). Since, I love to have discussions with the students, it is essential that I remember that content should be on track. The mention of this error, alerted me to the fact that I often allow students to explore personal content within the class discussions. It was my intent to utilize their input to roping the students in for new concepts, but I must be careful because this could be the students roping me in. If not careful, class discussions could become techniques that student utilize against the teacher, to push their agenda. I must remember that discussions cannot be a “free for all” (Witter, 2013, p. 217), it must be limited to the concept

I have really enjoyed my practicum hours, observing and learning from the counselors at West High School. Many of my observations surrounded graduation and A-G requirements. Several of the counselors were going through the transcripts of their sophomores and juniors to see if they were still on track to graduate. Then, they would call in those they needed to meet with and talk to them individually. The solution for several that I sat in with was to add a zero period class. The counselors took two days to call in all of the English classes. They went over the differences between high school graduation requirements and A-G requirements needed to enter a CSU or UC school. Then, we handed out their transcripts, went over their gpa, and…

During this lesson, I was able to observe not only the classroom teacher, but also a student teacher from Texas A&M. As the student teacher was explaining to the students what a truism is, the teacher was pacing around the room as she spoke with the students about their essays. The student sat in their desk the entire period, listening and learning about how to correctly write a truism.…

The NAEA states that students should have one hundred minutes of art instruction per week, with a teacher to student ratio of one art teacher per three hundred to four hundred students. As for the construction of the art room there should be a sink that is easily accessible with cupboards for paint supplies. Other shelves need to be placed in the room for the less messy items; such as, crayons and paper. Plenty of materials such as, water containers, painting surfaces, aprons, smocks, or old shirts, newspapers, paper towels, assorted papers and stamp pads should be kept on hand and should be accessed easily. Newspaper without print is ideal for large drawings with pencil. Plastic pieces are great for sculptures. Linderman (1997) suggest that…

I felt it took me a lot longer than everyone else to get used to the system, and because the class was quite noisy, at times i was unable to hear what Heather was saying. I did ask another student to explain certain things to me, but I felt I was distracting them from their own studies. By the end of the session I felt no clearer about doing a literature search on my own. Even though I had narrowed my search down to 12 hits, this had happened with help from another student, and I didn’t feel confident enough to know how to go about it on my own. I felt confused and overwhelmed, but I was too embarrassed to stay behind and ask for more help. Fortunately we had all been given a hand-out as well, to enable us to keep practising in our own time. When I got home I looked through the booklet, and found after reading it several times it began to sink in, I got straight back on the computer and accessed the search engine immediately.…

According to Baumeister and Bushman (2014), “Norms are standards established by society to tell its members what types of behaviors are typical or expected” (p. 308). One step further would be social norms, which are “the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society … Norms change according to the environment or situation and may be modified over time (“Your Dictionary”, n.d.). Different social situations call for their own set of expectations about the conventional way to behave and social norms help us to understand social influence, particularly conformity. I think that social norms are necessary and useful…

Mrs. Ross has her fourth grade students move their desks together into groups of 2 to do a group activity. She instructs them to pair with anyone they choose. Teresa raises her hand, “I don’t want to pair with Megan again because she doesn’t do any of the work. Can I have someone else?” Megan who is soft-spoken just looks down at the floor as the class waits for the teacher’s response. Mrs. Ross asks Teresa and Megan to come with her outside and instructs the class to carry on with the activity.…

“In an effective classroom students should not only know what they are doing. They should also know why and how.” Harry Wong is an educational speaker that tries to help teachers be able to not only educate their students, but also teach them how to comprehend and logically think. Even at Tell City Jr.-Sr. High School, there are a variety of different types of teachers; moreover, this affects the atmosphere of their classrooms. Many outsiders may see our school as boring and being the same as any old school. For the students, every single classroom has a different atmosphere that they either love or greatly dislike.…

I had the opportunity to observe a 10th grade English “inclusion” class at the Greater Lowell Technical High School. I am performing my practicum experience at Greater Lowell Tech (GLT), and was astonished to learn that special education accounts for almost 25% of the student population! I honestly had little knowledge of inclusion classrooms, and any information I had obtained was through literature or discussion with fellow classmates. There were no such things as inclusion classrooms when I was in high school, and special education was not nearly as prevalent. I chose an inclusion classroom to do my observation out of sheer curiosity and thought it would be an interesting experience. I knew a direct observation for this assignment would definitely give me insight into what techniques are used with the special education students, and allow me to see how they interact and work with regular students. This class was 90 minutes long, and co-taught by Mr. John Gibson (SPED), and Mrs. Jenny Flood (9th and 10th grade English teacher).…
