Age of Exploration During the Age of Exploration in 1400-1700, European explorer discovered new lands. The reason why explorers travel were God, gold, and glory.Europeans believed they were going to Asia for the spice trade, but actually discovered The New World . From the discovery of The New World, two cultures collided.People debated about whether or not European explorers should still be glorified to society. The effect of exploration were both positive and negative. EUROPEAN EXPLORERS SHOULD NOT BE CELEBRATED because of the treatment they gave to the Native Americans, and the way diseases destroyed culture .
Explorers shouldn't be celebrated firstly because the way they treated the Native Americans. The Europeans saw themselves as a far more advanced and civilized culture so when they came, to what would one day be known as America, they saw people who ran around with little clothing and did not have carriages or even saddles for their horses. The Europeans treated the Native Americans with disrespect .In Document 10 Bartolome De Las Casas stated that when the Europeans came they started killing innocent Native Americans they even made bets to each other about splitting a man in half with one swing of a sword or pike , who could cut off his head ,and/or spill out his guts. This is how they torchered the natives. They also help with the destruction of culture .
Explorers shouldn't be celebrated secondly because of the destruction of culture. When Europeans came to the new world they brought many diseases. The diseases brought to this continent by the Europeans included bubonic plague, chicken pox, pneumonic plague, cholera, diphtheria, influenza, measles, scarlet fever, smallpox, typhus, tuberculosis, and whooping cough. The diseases introduced in the Americas by the Europeans were crowd diseases: that is, individuals who have once contracted the disease and survived become immune to the

I must admit, at the onset, that I have a pretty negative thoughts about Columbus. My teenage idealization of the man who "discovered" America was crushed when I read the text book and hearing class discussions. From the book, I learned how Columbus enslaved and murdered thousands of Arawaks and other Native American people. The New World he had once portrayed as a paradise had swiftly spun into something much darker. Columbus's actions were unjustifiable immoral, to say the very least, inhumane. However, he honestly believed that he was doing a good thing by "converting" the Arawaks. Based on the cruel historical events and the fact that he didn’t really discover America. Why should he be celebrated?…

In 1492 Christopher Columbus set out on a voyage of discovery (Discovery for his civilization group, for what he found was already inhabited), a voyage that would inadvertently shape the world. Today, over 500 years after his initial voyage, we still discuss the consequence of this voyage. Columbus Day in the United States is a holiday that was celebrated as early as 1905, and became an official federal holiday in 1937. Presently the debate has risen on whether this date should be recognized or celebrated, with places such as Los Angeles along with other cities moving to replace the second Monday in October to Indigenous Peoples Day. In this paper I will argue why we at Cal Poly Pomona should not “Celebrate” Columbus day, but why we should…

Christopher Columbus is celebrated every year in America on October 9th. Columbus is said to have sailed and discovered America in 1492. This is completely inaccurate and it is perplexing to think that people actually celebrate such an absurd person. The cruelty he caused, the slavery he established, and the credit he got for things he did not do, all contribute to why Columbus Day should not be celebrated. He cruelly harmed people for not accomplishing his orders, hunted men, and persuaded rape. Forcing labor, dispatching shipments of slaves, and setting detrimental habits, all were ways Columbus slavery. Lastly, Columbus got credit for discovering america, discovering that the world was flat, and spreading christianity.…

Many misconceptions surrounding the man and the holiday, cause us to believe that this man not only discovered America, but that he was also very peaceful when he arrived in the Caribbean. “There are some scholars who would argue that “the Age of Discovery” should be called “the Age of Destruction.”. I agree and disagree with the statement because it was in fact the “Age of Discovery” because transculturation along with the spread of Christianity began and there was an increase of agriculture and economy. Nevertheless, it too, is appropriate to be called the “Age of Destruction” because the birth of diseases affected the entire population, enslavement with the African Americans caused hardships and the destruction of the villages where the Native Americans resided came about.…

Half of the states in the United States recognize and observe Columbus Day as a federal holiday (“Office Holidays”). However, there has always been a controversy involving the celebration and glorification of European settlers from the Age of Exploration. Many individuals believe that European settlers such as Columbus did not leave a positive impact on the lives for the Native Americans at this time; this controversial subject has led to a divide between the country, and different ethnic groups. In spite of the many controversies that surround this issue, European settlers from the Age of Exploration should be celebrated in modern times because of the societal concepts they introduced to the Native Americans which embarked new systems and…
