African Americans are trying their best to use their new level of freedom to thrive. “For we colored people did not know how to be free and the white people did not know how to have a free colored person about them (Houston Hartsfield)”. Both sides of the party were trying to get used to African Americans' new found freedom and because of it they were still mistreated in ways they had more choice than they previously had. Although new rights were talked about by the Emancipation, they were not all given to the African Americans. There were still previous slave owners and southerners who did things with their power to keep freed people from gaining too much freedom and power. “Former slaves of every age took advantage of the opportunity to become literate (Houston Hartsfield)”. Black individuals were looking to get the most out of their new freedom, so they were looking to get the best education that was available to them. Freedom had opened doors for them to educate themselves more than ever before. Although they still had to live in fear, they tried making the best of what they had by going and finding these resources so they could become literate for themselves. If these individuals were in powerful positions where they would not be fearing for their lives, they could have made a lot of good decisions to change and make a part of the world more fair. A lot of the time the people who are the discriminators try to camouflage it as something it's not. Most of the time they know they are doing wrong, so they try to make it seem like it is another issue when they know it is not. If you were to ask the groups that are targeted and wrongfully treated, it would be more common than you'd think that you would find people who have first hand experienced racial discrimination in their life. “57% of black Americans reported discrimination in pay and consideration for promotions (Harvard)”. More than half of the black American community claimed to have experienced a form of racial discrimination within a place of work. These people who are wrongly treating colored people don't realize quite how much they can impact the entire community. If multiple employers are choosing not to hire because of the color of one's skin, it makes it extremely difficult for a community to properly thrive and live comfortably. “22% of black Americans say they have avoided seeking medical care for themselves or a member of their family out of concern they would be discriminated against because they are black (Harvard)”. There shouldn't be anytime where a group of people should be scared of seeking help they want and need. It may not seem like a large amount, but it should be significantly less knowing that those fields of work focus is to cater to people and to make them feel
