The NAACP's expressed objective was to work to secure the rights ensured in the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth revisions to the United States Constitution. During this month, the United States along with Canada and the United Kingdom, remember the important people and events in the history of the African people as they moved from their original homeland to other locations around the world. The interview by Dr. Veronique Thompson really moved and touched me. She really hit home and it was very informative about the African American community. There are a lot of truth and reality that she spoke during the interview. For example, when she touched on the names that we were once given as a race: Negro, colored, Black and African American. However, my mother never allowed us to use the word nigga, she always told us that the word came from a white group stemming from prejudice. Black History month at one time held an important part in our nation’s history. It was a time when blacks were treated poorly and not given equal rights. They were discriminated against at every level. They were denied entrance into Sports, Colleges and even some churches. They were never recognized for any of their accomplishments. A black person was considered less than qualified in several areas. Black history month was originated to make people aware of the accomplishments of several black personalities. I met with Sofia Mitre. Sofia is a Mexican expatriate. She has lived in the U.S. for the vast majority of her life; however, she constantly travels to and from Mexico to visit family and to accompany her father on business trips. Although we both grew up in Austin, Sofia considers herself a visitor to the U.S. as a citizen of Mexico. I chose to interview a close friend of mine, Rheanna Pieroni. Rheanna has been a friend of mine for ten years and counting. We attended the same grade school and high school, but now go to different universities. She is 19 years old and attends The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to major in marketing and supple chain. Rheanna likes to explore the city with her friends and educate herself on foreign cultures. She also has a passion for traveling and immersing herself in foreign culture. Rheanna has had the opportunity to travel to Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. In High School, she spent four years studying the French language/culture. Between the centuries of the 15 and 18 hundreds, 1,2000,000 slaves were brought to North America from Africa to provide free and plentiful labor required by the plantation system, the foundation of the economy of a new united states. During the civil war Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation which freed slaves but granted him his death by assassination. During the years of 1865 through 1870, the thirteenth (nation agreed to no slavery), fourteenth (gave citizenship to slaves), and fifteenth (gave African men the right to vote) amendments were ratified. During 1875 the civil rights act occurred. During 1876 the Jim Crow Laws began, laws at the local level which preserved segregation in the south. In 1896 the Plessy vs. Ferguson case occurred, which the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Jim Crow laws and segregation. In 1909 the NAACP was founded to fight for Civil Rights of minorities. During 1941-1948: Roosevelt signs an executive order, banning discrimination in federal hiring. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier being the first colored person to play major league baseball. Truman signs executive orders that results in desegregation of the armed forces. In 1954 the Brown vs. board of Education case occurred where the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools are inherently unequal and orders desegregation of public schools. In 1955, Emmett Till, a 14 year old boy who was brutally murdered in Mississippi. He was only identified by his fathers ring that he was wearing and his murderers, Roy Bryant and J.W Milam were acquitted by an all white jury. In 1957, little rock nine happened, in which there was some black kids who went to an all white school. In 1963, the march on Washington occurred. In 1964, the civil rights act was signed and Mississippi civil rights workers were killed by the kkk. African Americans have faced great difficulties in owning and having a voice and respect in the early years in the United States of America. For far too long, they have faced oppression by the whites. However, they no longer accepted the mistreatment and double standards they faced and took a stand and fought for they believed in.
