Adarsh Housing Society Scam
What is adarsh housing society scam? In 2010, the Indian media brought to public the alleged violations of rules at various phases of construction in the Adarsh Society. Questions were raised on the manner in which apartments in the building were allocated to bureaucrats, politicians and army personnel who had nothing to do with Kargil War and the way in which clearances were obtained for the construction of the building of the Adarsh Society. Adarsh Housing Society was originally supposed to be a six-storey building that would house Kargil war heroes and widows. But the building ended up being a 31-storey tower. The high-rise, built on 6,450 sq metres within the Colaba naval area. But no one knows how army gave the permission to build a housing society on this land. It was exposed that Mumbai's posh Colaba area land (about 3800 square meters) with the complicity of military officers was given to a private housing society. But army took no action in this regard because several army officials, including former army Chief Deepak Kapoor himself, had flats in this society. However, the houses in the society were allotted to senior army commanders, a former environment minister, legislators and bureaucrats. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Income Tax Department and the Enforcement Directorate(ED) are in the process of investigating allegations that three former chief ministers, Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan of the state of Maharashtra were also involved in the scam. Another issue that remains to be addressed is the ownership of the land. It is yet to be clarified whether the defence or the state revenue department owns it. Mumbai collector Chandrashekhar Oke, had submitted a preliminary report on the same. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also been scrutinising how defence land was transferred to the Adarsh co-operative housing society and how the beneficiaries, including former services chiefs, politicians

There seems to be a prevailing perception that apart from its southernmost colonial quarters, Mumbai is essentially a schizophrenic urbanscape where emergent islands of modernity are surrounded by an endless sea of informal shacks. This image of a city sharply divided between opulence and poverty is used across the political spectrum to justify redevelopment projects in the name of equality. The intuitive but misleading parallels slum = poverty and high-rise = middle-class, coupled with an incapacity to recognize the variety that actually exists in between these extreme categories, has allowed countless acts of injustice to be perpetuated in the name of slum upgrading and redevelopment projects. In the process, the incremental development of many so-called slums in Mumbai has been curtailed, with dramatic consequences for the concerned populations and for the long-term social and urban sustainability of the city. Mainstream conceptions of what a world-class city should look like and a tendency to understand urbanization from the point of view of form rather than process…

The Team Solar Energy Company (Team Solar), floated by the main accused Biju Radhakrishnan and Saritha Nair, directors of the company, allegedly collected advance amounts from large number of people and investors by offering to make them business partners, or in the guise of installing alternate sources of energy and failed to deliver the goods. The company awarded a "Virgin Earth Golden Feather Environment Award" to several prominent people of Kerala to gain media coverage and credibility.[1] The scam came to light when one of the customers who had paid for the installation filed a case against the company. The arrangement has defrauded several agencies and people to the tune of crores of rupees and at least one lady actor was used as "brand ambassador" to lure gullible people.[2]There were widespread protests across the state, mainly by Leftist youth groups, after an interview with an industrialist was aired on television, which alleged fraud by the company.[3] The incident drew much attention because most of those who lost big money were all influential people, the women allegedly involved fuelled the imagination/ jealousy of the depraved Malayali Media and the alleged involvement of three officials from the office of the Chief Minister of Kerala,…

In 2007, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) began planning for Delhi’s first in-situ slum rehabilitation project. It chose the Kathputli Colony (Kathputli), a jhuggi jhopri (JJ) cluster tucked into West Delhi’s Shadipur region, as the site for this project. In 2009, Raheja—the private developers chosen to undertake the project—announced the construction of Raheja Phoenix, “Delhi's first true skyscraper,” on the current Kathputli Colony plot. With a planned height of 190 metres, Raheja Phoenix is 54 floors of luxury flats, equipped “with sky club and helipad,” according to the developers. The Kathputli in-situ slum rehabilitation is a three-step process. First, the residents of Kathputli who qualify for the project will move from their current settlement in Shadipur to a transit camp. Second, Raheja will raze the JJ cluster and begin the construction of high-rise apartments—and a luxury skyscraper—on site. Finally, within the next three to five years, the transit camp residents will move back into the settlement, next door to Raheja Phoenix.…
