Achilles: A Sympathetic Character In The Iliad
Have you ever done something wrong out of anger or grief? Sometimes when bad things happen to us,

it piles up until we cannot handle the anger or pain any longer and we burst. We make poor decisions and

do things that we later regret in life. When we make bad decisions, people around us tend to forget to

listen to our side of the story. Achilles, a warrior from The Iliad, can relate to this. Achilles emerges as a

sympathetic character in The Iliad because people took from him, and because he showed mercy to

people who did not fully deserve it.

As the king of the Myrmidons, people would view Achilles as one who has almost everything he wants -

which would be false because people took from him. When Agamemnon refused to spare

His spoils of war must have meant a lot to him. Another time Achilles

had something taken from him, was when Hector killed his best friend, Patroclus. “On hearing of

Patroclus’s death, Achilles is overcome with grief and rage.” Imagine a loved one being murdered or

losing a dear friend. Achilles must have been aching with pain and anger.

Achilles emerges as a sympathetic character in The Iliad also because he showed mercy to people who

did not fully deserve it. When Agamemnon wanted to take Briseis away from Achilles, Achilles was

filled with rage. “He slid the big blade slowly from the sheath,” (1.226,227) attempting to kill

Agamemnon. He was stopped by Athena and was convinced to spare Agamemnon’s life. Although he

knew he would lose Briseis, he still took mercy on Agamemnon. With the rage poor Achilles had inside

him, because of losing his spoils of war, all he did was mourn for her. Another time Achilles showed

mercy was when Priam, the father of Hector - who killed Achilles’ best friend - went to beg Achilles to

give up Hector’s body. “As you wished , sir, the body of your son is now set free. He lies in state. At

Now let us think of supper.”

(24.189-193) Achilles did not only spare Hector’s body, but also had supper with the father of the man

who murdered his best friend. That is something that not very many people would do. He not only shows

mercy to Priam but also shows kindness.

Achilles may have done some bad things in The Iliad, but he was overcome with so much grief and

anger. Because people took from him, and because he showed mercy to people who did not fully deserve

it, Achilles emerges as a sympathetic character in The Iliad. One should keep in mind that Achilles was

angry and hurt and yet he still did good things that most people would not have done when they are in the

state he was

Achilles was called a tragic hero because his flaw was to be selfish. A selfish person lacked consideration for others and was concerned with their own pleasure. In the Iliad, Achilles mostly cared about himself. For example, Agamemnon stole Achilles’ prize possession. For this reason, Achilles refused to join the war because he was angry with Agamemnon. Achilles stated, “But listen while I tell you exactly how I want things to be: ‘I want you to win me great honor and glory in the eyes of all Greeks, so that they give my lovely women back to me and…

In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

Literary heroes have been important to stories and poems throughout history. Each author develops his hero through a unique writing style, combining conscious use of detail, diction, tone and other narrative techniques to outline a hero's personality. Homer, in his epic poem The Iliad, develops two classic heroes who are distinctly different at first glance, but upon closer inspection are very similar in terms of their basic characteristics. Hector and Achilles both are courageous soldiers, relatively honorable men, and respected leaders, but they also both have human failings that eventually lead to tragedy. In Homer's lyrical verses and in his use of detail, diction, meter and imagery, he paints his own portrait of a classic hero through the brave deeds as well as the human flaws of Hector and Achilles that eventually lead to the downfall of proud and powerful Hector.…

He is willing to sacrifice everything else so that his name will be remembered. During his fight against Hector, Achilles refuses any aide from his comrades; afraid he would be second best. "And brilliant Achilles shook his head at the armies, never letting them hurl their sharp spears at Hector-someone might snatch the glory, Achilles come in second,"(2.245-217). Another case of Achilles infamy "Hector-surely you thought when you stripped Patroclus' armor that you, you would be safe! Never fear of me-far from fighting as I was-you fool! Left behind there, down by the beaked ships his great avenger waited, a greater man by far-that man was I, and I smashed your strength!"(2.390-345). Achilles' deep-seated character flaws constantly impede his ability to act with nobility and integrity. This trait is accountable for his sordid response to Hector's distorted plea of honoring his body when he's dead. "You unforgivable, you…don't talk to me of pacts. There are no binding oaths between men and lions-wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds-they are all bent on hating each other to the death. So with you and me, no love between us, no truce till one or the other falls or gluts with blood,"(2.309-314). The respect for a fallen enemy vanishes as bloodlust, vengeance, and rage run through Achilles' veins. Achilles ruthlessly impends and torments Hector as he breathes his last breathe. "Would to god my rage, my fury would drive me…

Achilles is known as one of the strongest warriors in his time, half god and half human. "The son of Peleus in the line of Zeus" as "strong, swift, and godlike" (Homer 141, 132). His mother Thetis, had dipped him as a child in the River Styx making him to be immortal everywhere except the heel by which she held him. Achilles had humanlike characteristics. He fought and risked his life for the people, many descendants from God themselves. Achilles was one of the most vital characters in the story. Being the ultimate most powerful warrior of all time, he wishes for nothing in his life but to be the most glorious man alive, mortal or immortal. It is this profound desire for glory and honor, that in the end leads to his demise. He helped to raised the Greek soldiers’ moral and was an excellent fighter. He fights to save his city, and believes in preconceived notions of his life, or predetermined destiny. Instead of fulfilling his desires, he fulfills those already given to him. Fate does not determine every action, incident, and occurrence, but it does determine the outcome of life.…

The first characteristic of a tragic hero is that they must suffer more than deserved. This stands true for Achilles, Hector, Beowulf, and Hamlet. Achilles, son of King Peleus and Thetis, rightfully earned his title as one of the greatest heroes in the war between the Greeks and Trojans. Achilles was a special warrior because he could only be killed if he was wounded in his…

Achilles cares about nothing other than himself and making sure that his name lives on forever, while Hector cares about winning the battle for his family and country. In one battle, Hector kills Patroclus thinking it was Achilles, which really sets Achilles off and is the reason that Achilles rejoins the war. When the two warriors finally meet near the end of the Epic, Hector is confronted with the fact that he is indeed going to die. Hector tries to think of ways to get out of the battle with Achilles, like bribery. This shows that Hector is not the perfect hero like many people may have thought when they first read about him. One cannot forget that Hector is only human, and that he does have the same characteristics as us humans do now. Everyone has to face a fear that they do not necessarily want to from time to time, and courage is the trait that brings the true heroes to the forefront. After being chased by Achilles for a while, Hector finally realizes that he has to fight Achilles. The fact that Hector stands up for himself and his country proves that he is courageous and that he is indeed a…
