Acetophenone Synthesis Lab
Abstract

Oxidation was found for primary alcohol. When 6 drops of potassium dichromate and 1 drop of concentrated sulfuric acid were added to 1-pentanol, the color of 1-pentaol turned into dark green. In second experiment, precipitation was found when 6 drops of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine were added to both 5 drops of benzaldehyde and 5 drops of acetophenone. Based on these data, it is possible to find alcohol by oxidation and aldehyde by observing precipitation

Introduction This experiments is to find if one substance has alcohols, aldehydes or ketones. If one reactant is alcohol, the color of the reactant will be turned into green when 6 drops of potassium dichromate and 1 drop of concentrated sulfuric acid were added. Also,

6 cylinders were cleaned and completely dried before dropping solutions.

Experiment 1

5 drops of 1-pentaol was dropped in test tube 1.
5 drops of benzaldehyde was dropped in test tube 2.
5 drops of acetophenone was dropped in test tube 3.
6 drops of potassium dichromate and 1 drop of concentrated sulfuric acid were added to the solution in each test tube 1,2 and 3.
(concentrated sulfuric acid was very carefully handled because it was extremely corrosive and powerful oxidizing agent.) test tube 1, 2, 3 were observed if there were any chemical changes.

Experiment 2

5 drops of 1-pentaol was dropped in test tube 4.
5 drops of benzaldehyde was dropped in test tube 5.
5 drops of acetophenone was dropped in test tube 6.
6 drops of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine was added to the solution in each test tube 4,5 and 6. test tube 4, 5, 6 were observed if there were any chemical changes.

Results

Test tube 4 - clear yellow color of solution was observed.
Test tube 5 - orange color solution and red precipitate was observed.
Test tube 6 - dark orange color solution and red precipitate was observed.

The color change of the test tube 1 indicates primary alcohol was oxidized. The formation of a precipitate of the test tube 5 and 6 shows aldehyde and ketone form a precipitate when react with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine.

Discussion

In first experiment, only the color of the product of alcohol was turned into green. This reaction seems oxidization. According to T.W. Graham Solomons, primary alcohols can be oxidized to aldehydes and carboxylic acids by chromate and produce ketone. (page. 548)
The color change was observed because of reduction of Cr2O72- to Cr3+.

K2Cr2O7 O
CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2OH -----------------→ CH2CH2CH2CH2COH H2SO4

In second experiment, precipitation was observed. This proves that two test solution include aldehyde or ketone. This reaction is condensation reaction. The color of the precipitate was both red. It is because both reactant is

In the Cannizaro reaction an aldehyde is simultaneously reduced into its primary alcohol form and also oxidized into it 's carboxylic acid form. The purpose of this experiment is to isolate, purify and identify compounds 1 and 2 which contain 4-chlorobenzaldehyde, methanol, and aqueous potassium hydroxide. Compounds 1 and 2 are purified by crystallization. . The purified product will be characterized by IR spectroscopy and melting point.…

The reaction is first created by adding 4.2 mL of NaOH and 4.1 mL of Ethanol into a beaker. About 3 mL of acetone and 2.0 mL of Benzaldehyde are added into a separate beaker. After adding the two clear solutions together, a yellow color precipitate begins to form. Also, the smell of cherries emits from the solution. The solution sat for about 15 minutes before proceeding.…

In part 1, we obtain 10mL of each of the solutions. First, we test each solution with the pH meter. We found that the acidic solution has a lower pH value than the water, which is lower than 6.23 and the based solution has a higher pH value than the water, which is around 7.75 and higher. After that, we tested the solution with the Red and Blue Litmus paper. With acidic solution, the Red litmus paper will remain no change, and the Blue litmus paper will change from blue to red. With based solution, the Red litmus paper will change from red to blue; however, the Blue litmus paper will remain unchanged. We also used the pH paper to test the solutions. With acidic solution, the pH value is low and the colors are properly around pink and red. On the other hand, the based solution has a high pH value and the color is usually purple. Next, we added PHEN indicator to the solutions. The acidic solutions will remain no changed but the based solutions will change from colorless to pink. Finally, we added BTB indicator to the solutions. The acidic solutions will change from colorless to yellow, and the based solutions will remain unchanged.…

The overall goal of experiment four was to determine the identity of unknown cations presented to the student. But in order to know the identity of these unknowns, in part 1, Ag+, Pb+, and Hg22+ were presented to the student in aqueous solutions and then precipitated through experimentation. In part 2, the same procedure was enacted to determine which substances precipitated through qualitative analysis. Solubility rules were also a major theme as solubility is important in determining whether a reaction will produce a precipitate.…
