THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

An Acceptance speech is written to providean expression of gratitude for some form of award. An award is a symbol signifying approval or distinction or an honor or reward which has been given on the basis of merit, for excellence in a specific field. Courtesy requires that sometimes an acceptance speech is necessary in response to such an honor. Easier said than done! You will need to sound grateful but not condescending, modest but not retiring and humble and not arrogant.

THE FAREWELL SPEECH

A Farewell speech is written to extend good wishes at a special milestone in someone's life when leaving an organization, community, company, role or place. It provides an opportunity to thank people who have provided help and support. These occasions are generally informal but it is always helpful to plan what you are going to say in advance so that the content of your speech is not just left to chance and special references might be made to people who have played an important role. This type of speech should also be short and remember to try to inject some humor!

THE THANKYOU SPEECH

A thank you speech is a short public speech, which serves to express gratitude for something that was presented/offered to a person as a spiritual gift (love, support, help, personal time, caring attitude) or material one (a tangible article).

THE INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH

An Inspirational speech is written to persuade, or convince the listeners, that they can succeed. This might involve relating optimistic and uplifting stories, or anecdotes, based on faith or real life situations taken from the lives or ordinary or famous people from history, sports, politics and the Business world. The objective of an inspirational speech is to provide the listener with the desire and confidence to pursue difficult goals to maximise their own potential. An Inspirational speech is not an easy task and usually undertaken by professional speakers and politicians!

Commencement speeches are something every graduate is familiar with. Depending on what level you’re graduating from, the speakers could range from your best friend from Kindergarten, to a Politician or Celebrity. Commencement speeches are supposed to give us a taste of real life, while still inspiring us to be the best we can be. It seems rare that you’ll have a speaker who will break things down to you, and be completely and unabashedly honest, but David Foster Wallace does just that in his informal speech to the graduating class of Kenyon College.…

What constitutes a great and memorable speech? Following the recent results of the October 19th federal election in Canada, two major speeches were delivered – Justin Trudeau’s victory speech and Steven Harper’s defeat speech. Just as with President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech ("Top 10 Presidential Addresses of All Time"), people with political preference may rank one of the two speeches more highly solely due to the identity of the speaker. Thankfully however, Lifehack provides some invaluable insights on the basic factors of a memorable public address. According to the website, imagery increases the effectiveness of a strong public speech, as does connection with the audience and persuasive, powerful statements. Taking those factors into account will help in evaluating both Trudeau’s and Harper’s speeches with a minimal amount of political bias.…

One of the best commencement speeches that were given was by David Foster Wallace. Many may say that he was a brilliant man, which he truly was. In his speech you can say he gave a life lesson to his graduating class and the people among them. He gave his perspective of what “freedom” really is. Freedom is to be able to care of others instead of just yourself, to be able to be free from your own mind, to be able to change your default setting. You can be in control of your heart and your mind; be their master and be able to command them your wants and needs. Always try to think long and hard about your life decisions and everything that defines who you are. People can agree or disagree with Wallace’s point of…
