Divided We Stand
In Abraham Lincoln’s Lyceum Address, he stated, “ If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time or die by suicide”. This indicates that America’s downfall would not come from outsiders, but from rather internal forces. Only the American people could destroy the country. Another famous quote on this topic comes from Aesop: “United we stand, together we fall”. Combining these two quotes, America can only fall apart at the seams by people dividing. In his latest book, E.J. Dionne expresses the idea that Americans can’t come together

degree from a respectable university, letter of recommendations, previous job experience, and more. The first problem with that is how unattainable college is. For example, in
1940, Yale, one of the top colleges in the world, cost $50 a year to attend. Then, in 1980, the private university had a cost of attendance that ranged between $10,000-$12,000 per year. In the 2016 school year, the cost will be $63,250. In the golden age of the American
Dream, anyone that worked hard enough could attend college. That $50 equals around
$800 now, yet you could pay off your debts after around 1 or 2 years of working. College is only for the rich or those willing to spend the rest of their lives in debt to the government; “Some 77% of students from wealthy families earned bachelor 's degrees by age 24 in 2013, compared to only 9% of those from poor families, a new report has found… The study defines the wealthy as having family incomes above $108,650, while the poor earned less than $34,160,” (Luhby 1). It is pivotal in today’s society to have

“Every drop of blood spilt with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword” (Lincoln 4). One month before the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln stood and delivered a very unique Inaugural Address, not only because it was his second, but because it was structured very different from others. Lincolns first term had followed the war closely, and it was a great feat to be reelected for a second term. Lincoln’s reelection showed the faith of the people in Lincoln’s ability to lead, and to bring the nation back under one banner. Just as at Gettysburg, Lincoln’s speech was concise, and only contained what he felt necessary to address, which is where the uniqueness of his speech is seen. No other president, when giving an inaugural address, had thought to talk on the state of the union, instead feeling content with just a smile and a quick thankyou speech to their voters. One month after this speech, Robert E. Lee would surrender at Appomattox, and only forty days after the speech, Lincoln would be shot at point blank range by John Wilkes Booth, whom had been within eyesight of Lincoln when he gave this address, starting one of the largest man hunts of the time.…

Many seek out financial support, but it is not the cure to the problem. If higher education was more of a practical cost, more people would attend college without the fear of being in debt for many years after they graduate. Tuition is the defined as the total price a college charges for a class. Students may also pay other fees related to enrolling and attending college. The cost of tuition and fees varies by college. On average, a public two-year college in-district student pays $3,347 a year, including fees. A public four-year college in-state student will pay $9,139. A public four-year college out-of-state student pays $22,958, and lastly a private four-year college will spend $31,231 a year on tuition ("College Costs: FAQs"). The College Board study reports today’s students are paying more than three times what students paid more than 30 years ago to attend a public four-year college ("College Costs: FAQs"). The national average for in-state tuition plus fees increased this year to $9,139, a 2.9-percent increase over the last school year (Hernandez). The inflating cost of college…
