Abigail is an example of weakness i’d say. After being thrown out of the Proctor household, she tries to get back at John’s wife. She gathers up a bunch of girls and they go into the woods, she tries voodoo to cast a spell that’d kill his wife. After being caught in the woods she confesses to witchcraft once she see’s that all charges would be dropped, and places the blame on others. Which highly escalates the town into growing fearful. Knowing what she is doing, and seeing how it is hurting people. She is truthful, yet weak. She is a official in the court in Salem, along with Abigail and the others who confessed. She comes home one day with a poppet, and gives it to Elizabeth Proctor. Later in the evening a man named Cheever comes with charges of witchcraft against Elizabeth. He asks if in the house there are any poppets, Elizabeth says “No i’ve not had one since i was a child.” Upon looking around the house he finds the one Mary had made today, and uses it against Elizabeth. Proctor, angry, rushes to get Mary so she can tell the truth. She tells them how she did make the poppet in court today, and how Abigail was right next to her. He lifts the dress on the doll and sees a needle in the stomach, which the same injury that Abigail had today. She tells him she meant no harm from it, but he doesn’t believe her. After taking Elisabeth away, John comes to her and tells her she will confess to the court. She says she can’t because Abigail would kill her and charge Proctor with lechery. She is being manipulated by Abigail, and doesn’t want to go against her. So in court she tells the truth, but once Proctor steps in, she doesn’t want anything to do with it anymore. She is scared for her own safety. And rushes back to Abigail’s side, in saying that Proctor had controlled her to say everything.
