A Worn Path
Eudora Welty's short story A Worn Path is an interesting, the story full of symbolism. It explores some themes through the simple story of an elderly black woman in 1940s Mississippi, walking along an arduous path to town to collect medicine for her grandson. Along the way, she encounters various obstacles and interactions with others.
The main character is Phoenix Jackson, and her journey is to get medicine for her sick grandson. The main plot of the story concerns her journey the worn path and the events that happen on her journey. In Welty short story she is straight forward, she never uses distractions to tell the story. She made "a worn path" entirely up to the reader to work out what each encounter symbolizes to get the reader thinking.

Jackson experiences dreams along with her way; first, she imagines that she sees a slice of cake, "She did not dare to close her eyes, and when a little boy brought her a plate with a slice of marble-cake on it she spoke to him. "That would be acceptable." she said. then later, she fell in a ditch before the hunter arrives, she sees someone come to help her. Both times she reaches out her hand, and there is nothing there. It seems like because of her age she images things that are not there. She goes through a “old cotton field” and sees something tall, black, and skinny there, moving before her.” She believes that is "[Her] me senses is gone. I too old. I the oldest people I ever know. Dance, old scarecrow," she said, "while I dancing with you.", but really it’s a scarecrow. She blames this due to her old age, "My senses is gone. I too old. I the oldest people I ever know. Dance, old scarecrow," she said. This shows that they are all connected because she forgets and her vision misleads her as well.
Christian symbolism is also apparent in the narrative. For example, the fact that the story is set during the Christmas season, "In the paved city it was Christmas time. There were red and green electric lights strung and crisscrossed everywhere..." has led some critics to associate Phoenix's journey with that of a religious pilgrimage; her selfless concern for her grandson is interpreted as representing the true

Eudora Welty's short story "A Worn Path" takes place on an early December morning which deals with a very elderly and frail black woman, Phoenix; and the hardships inherent in her life. Phoenix Jackson is the main character, she is characterized as a strong poor elderly woman because of her appearance, personality and determination. For example, the narrator states, that Phoenix wore “a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket: all neat and tidy, but every time she took a step she might have fallen over her shoelaces, which dragged from her unlaced shoes " (475). The dark striped dress and long apron made of sugar sacks symbolizes poverty because of her hardships in life; this is the type of clothing most Negro women slaves wore back in the slavery days. The darkness of her dress represents her state of depression. The stripes on her dress symbolizes the prison bars showing she was held captive as a slave for some time.…

Now you go on home, Granny.” In addition, the man laughed at Phoenix multiple times and even called her an old colored person, yet all those insults did not stop her. She was determined to travel to the city, so she did not let this man stop her. In addition to determination, Phoenix is very loving and caring. This is proven when the nurse talks to Phoenix and told her, “The doctor said as long as you cam to get it, you could have it, but it’s an obstinate case.” This shows the reader, that the reason Phoenix made her journey was to help her grandson who has a throat problem, for she had to come get the medicine because the doctor would not deliver it to her. This proves that Phoenix is a loving person due to the fact that she made a difficult journey, just to help try to heal her…

A short story and poem, no matter how structurally different, are two literary pieces where a rich story is embedded. Readers are drawn towards these scripts by means of rhythm (poem), characterization, or a fictional setting in their respective narratives. However, the mere script would not make it entertaining enough to hold the reader’s attention. It would depend on the imagination of the readers as they are reading the story as to what they take from it. Every reader has their own way of visualizing the descriptions and symbolism used by the author. It is through imagination that the readers are able to interpret what the author is trying to depict within the symbolism and other descriptive languages. The beauty of stories and poems is that they are generated and created through the readers own imagination which consequently allows each individual reader to build their own personal connection with the literary piece. The two literary pieces “The Road Not Taken” (poem) and the short story “A Worn Path” are different in terms of actual writing styles, however they both share the same theme which is every person’s journey is greatly governed by their decisions and no matter how many paths there may be, it is still the choices that the person makes that determine the ending of his or her journey. Each one conveys a theme of life journeys and the challenges and struggles that go along with those journeys. In “The Road Not Taken” it is the journey one must make while trying to choose the right path in life. One path seemingly offers a more familiar road and perhaps the easier of the two. The other path is clearly been less traveled upon, yet yearns to be. In “A Worn Path” the journey that one woman takes on in order to care for her sick grandchild is unfolded. It is…

In the story “A Worn Path” Phoenix Jackson is the sole main character. There are a few very minor characters in the story: including the Hunter, the Doctor and the doctor’s assistant. It is made very clear from the beginning of the story that Phoenix is an elderly black woman; the author describes her appearance in great detail. “Her eyes were blue with age. Her skin had a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles and as though a whole little tree stood in the middle of her forehead, but a golden color ran underneath, and the two knobs of her cheeks were illuminated by a yellow burning under the dark. Under the rag her hair came down on her neck in the frailest of ringlets, still black, and with an odor like copper.” (Paragraph 2) The author draws a clear picture of Phoenix Jackson’s appearance with this very descriptive paragraph. Not only are we able to tell that she is elderly by the author’s description of her appearance, we can also tell by how slowly she moves and the fact that she needs a cane. Another way it is apparent…

Determination, strength, hope, endurance, perseverance, and love are only a few words to describe the readers feelings while reading this story. The author, Eudora Welty, screams-silently through her gently placed words in story, “A Worn Path”. The inspiring and encouraging phrases spoken to someone, “never give up”, “keep fighting”, “never back down”, are the unspoken feeling through the characters perseverance, determination, and love. The tone in the story is displayed through life of a black, negro-woman, who faces daily obstacles, during a time when black Americans were treated unjustly and unfairly. Motherhood is expressed in an unusual manner in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty. Phoenix is described in detail as an old, very poor African American woman who talks out loud to herself and has an estranged imagination while she starts out on a long journey through the woods to town. She was so poor that the author says “She carried a thin, small cane made from an umbrella, and with this she kept tapping the frozen earth in front of her” (1). She appears very delusional and or may have dementia because she does all type of weird things and her language is of someone who’s illiterate and in reading this story it makes you wonder why someone has not Baker Acted her already. For example, she talks to the animals as if they were actually engaged in a conversation with them when she says “Out of my way, all of you foxes, owls, beetles, rabbits, coons and wild animals! … Keep out from under these feet, little bob-whites … Keep the big wild hogs out of my path” … (1). Hearing her talk like this alone would make you think that you yourself are crazy or either well on the way to being crazy. I mean who in their right mind would engage in conversing with animals in such a manner. Everything she says is either not a complete sentence or makes no sense whatsoever. For example it’s definitely expressed when she says “Seems like there is chains about my feet, time I get this far” (1). Now the proper grammar would have been “It seems like chains are shackled to my feet by the time I get this far”…
