A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings Summary
Human Selfishness and Trivialization of Beauty in
A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is a magical realist short story written by Gabriel Garca Marquez. It tells the story of how Pelayo and his wife Elisenda, find a filthy, old man while killing crabs during a rainstorm. The man has wings, and is assumed to be an angel, there to take their sick child to heaven. It is a story which discusses how humans simply only find value in those things considered beneficial to us, and simultaneously examines abrasive topics such as callousness and exploitation.

As previously mentioned, a recurring theme in the short story is the idea that humans solely find beauty and value in those things which are beneficial to us, and that this need (for people who are beneficial) is so strong and affects us so intricately that

Instead of being in awe due to his ability to perform any miracles at all, something which is miraculous and would even, in some aspects, make him superior to the other inhabitants there, they once again trivialize the incident, and focus instead on the spider woman.

Despite the fact that the spider woman is not any less peculiar than the angel per se, she serves a purpose to the inhabitants. While the old man is barely conscious in his dirty chicken coop, the spider woman tells a story of morality and discusses human truths which the inhabitants can easily relate to and even pity. She serves a purpose to them, and by doing so, she is beneficial. This, again, is another discernible example of the theme of the fundamental understatement of miracles and beauty. Peculiar things are only interesting and significant if they serve a purpose and can be beneficial to us

“"He's an angel," she told them. “He must have been coming for the child, but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down."” This is a quote comes from the short story, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story itself is very intriguing; however it is science fiction. It is about an old, strange man who is apparently sick and beat up with large wings on his back. He falls into this town where this couple takes him in and leaves him in a chicken coop. As soon as he gets better he flies away and the story ends. Although it may seem like there is no reasoning behind this story it does have a theme. Also, with it being science fiction, the credibility the author demonstrates in the story is well put.…

The old man is also being characterized as a superficial angel. As if he was an animal at a circus, people mistreated the old man by “having fun” just by throwing things at him. As it says in chapter two in page 354 Pelayo and Elisenda describe the old man as if he was a lost sailor. Father Gonzaga also describes the old man as an imposter. He characterizes him as a person who makes people think he’s an angel, whom appears to magically make miracles. Also being treated like an animal, the old man is put in the pen house with the chickens. Knowing the old man is humanely they don’t do anything in response to save him or even treat him humanely right. Until one day when Elisenda was in the kitchen and saw the old man flew away into the light. And that was when they knew he was finally resting, as well with…

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” tells of the curious encounter between a rather mundane family and a mysterious old man with wings who crash-lands in their backyard. In keeping with magical realist style, this short story relies on deeply evocative descriptions and poetic devices to reveal a strange, almost ethereal setting. Yet Marquez’s story is not limited by the stylistically typical blend of the fantastic and the real. Rather, through the calculated use of symbols like invalids and wings, the story creates palpable literary tension that suggests reality is not an objective absolute, but the creation of each individual.…

The story has a supernatural setting for the world behaves strangely. For one thing, there are swarms of crabs that crawl into the house and must be killed. Another is the darkness that the world gets at noon. There is the arrival of a very old man with wings and the strange half-woman-half-spider who have stolen the attention of the curious people. But the most interesting part is not the supernatural setting itself but the annoyance of the townspeople towards these seemingly strange events as if these things happen everyday. This juxtaposition of the real and surreal is consistent throughout the story as well as the attitude of the people, which can be seen in the way they treated the old man with wings.…

This “angel” is a fictional character, but as the story goes on, the “angel” teaches many moral lessons, which makes this a fable. (Marquez 340)…

From beginning to end in “Avery Old Man with Enormous Wings” along with “The Most Handsomest Drowned Man In The World” Marquez illustrates the human flaw of greediness evidently through various actions taking place. An example of greediness from “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is portrayed from the two characters Pelayo and Elisenda with their actions towards the angel such as keeping him “locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop” for their own wellbeing (Marquez pg. 588). Not only does Marquez describe the two characters as greedy, but he also shows what extent humans will go through just to get what they want. This situation automatically shows satire to the reader that will heighten throughout the story. An event of greediness from “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” is illustrated through various women taking care of the diseased man “secretly [comparing] him to their own men…and they ended up dismissing them…as the weakest, meanest, and most useless creatures on earth” because they wanted more from them for their own good (Marquez paragraph 5). Not only does Marquez render the fact that the women want more of their husbands, but he also displays how people are not satisfied easily. This event helps build onto the major topic of satire that continuous to grow. These events help build the satire Marquez continues to illustrate throughout the stories.…

The story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is about an Angel that is stumbled upon by a Columbian family after he falls from the sky because of a bad storm. He is put in a chicken coop because the family doesn’t know what to do with him and later decides to let the towns people pay to visit to see him. The townspeople see him as a great creature until a “spider woman” comes along and the townspeople loose all interest in him for her. The Angel was very old, raggedy and couldn’t fly, that is until he builds up the strength enough to fly away at the end of the story. He stood out from the rest of civilization. Society likes to think of itself as being highly mind-opening. It seems like the people in the story didn’t want to believe that the man was an angel because they would have reconsider everything they believed in.…

The short story, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, brings to light the propensity of human nature and society in general. The reactions of all the members of the community to the events in the story reflect their natural tendencies as human beings. The characters’ actions in the short story reflect the theme of the story which is that typical human nature is to react negatively or cruelly towards something that may be unfamiliar to them, and will leave people with empty thoughts of wondering and attention seeking tendencies that selfishly blinds them. It is possible that the author was trying to give an example of how people would commonly react in such a way that the main characters reacted in this specific short story. The man with wings is a definite curiosity but it also seems like he is very usual and ordinary. This story criticizes the human need for perfection. Also, it is made clear that the author didn’t have a particular main character. Most people would think it is obviously the man with the enormous wings, but his character is never really built upon to the point of clearly being a protagonist, even though all the other people in the story act extremely antagonistic towards him, which leaves the reader wondering. This adds to the theme of unanswered questions, and how the characters of the story reinforce it. The story does have many characters, but none of them can actually be given the title of a main character.…

In A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, a disruption was formed at the beginning of the story. A child was having a temperature and a very old man suddenly took up residence in its house. The story did not give the exact location of the village, nor the purpose of the old man’s sudden arrival nor where he had come from. But the author had used a series of adjectives to describe the old man. He was a mute stupor. He had bald skull, faded hairs, was dirty and had half-plucked wings. He dressed like a rag-picker and he was moving and groaning at the rear of the courtyard. The author gave a vivid description which created a strong image in the reader’s mind and immediately aroused the reader’s interest. It would be common to link the old man with enormous wings as an angel, but the descriptions told us that his appearance and condition was just a common mortal, and his circumstances were even worse than ours. At the beginning of the fiction, the author used a third-person narration of “he”, “she”, “it”, “they” while conveying the introduction of the…
