A Small Free Kiss In The Dark.

What was your first impression of the book?
My first impression of the novel titled “a small free kiss in the dark”was ,that it would be a bit weird. Because the title made absolutely no sense to me, and it still doesn't make sense to me in chapter 11. Aside from that after reading the prologue I knew that there were going to be some people named Billy and Max. The narrator was still unknown. As we begun reading I understood well what was going on, and I thought it would be one of those books were something unexpected happens. I just did not know what.

What do we know about the main characters?
Skip; Skip runs away from home because he is from a broken home with no father or mother. Skip is not his real name rather his

It is damaged but Skip cannot part with it for what reason? Because he feels that it gives him strength and he feels his dad is a part of him “...it was all I had left of him pg.7”. He also says "The word 'coat' makes people think about feelings like comfort, warmth, friendship, safety and happiness." P.42
This means his dad's coat comforts him and makes him think about safety and happiness.
Cecily says to Skip “...home is where your winter coat is”. Well for starters your home isn't necessarily your house. Home is somewhere you feel safe and comfortable. You may feel this safety in your winter coat or you may feel comfortable. It does not literally mean wherever your winter coat is your house. Home does not have to be a place just somewhere you feel safe-your winter coat perhaps.
When Skip firsts sees Tia he mentions her coat firstly because hers was like his and wasn't in tip-top condition “...her coat fell apart at the front because there were no buttons to put through the holes.”p.117.He also seems to notice people's coats a lot more because of his love for his coat.

Throughout the story, "The Jacket", Young Gary's jacket represents many emotions. The main two I got from the reading was poverty and the young boys insecurity once he began to wear the jacket. When young Gary first walked into his bedroom and saw the new jacket on his bedpost he immediately disliked it. One of the representations of the jacket is poverty. He says, "I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big that I knew I'd have to wear it a long time." Towards the end of the story he says, "I wore that thing for three years." Another representation would be his insecurity. You know the young boy is insecure of his new jacket because at one point he says, " I sat on the bed, stood against the bed, and combed my hair to see what I look…

In my opinion, the jacket Soto continuously mentions is more than an article of clothing to him; I feel it signifies a life of poverty. He hates the green jacket his mother bought him and blames his mother for her bad taste in clothes. He describes the jacket as big and ugly and wishes it belonged to his siblings instead of him. He defines his cool leather dream jacket to his mother but he never gets it Soto becomes aggravated with his mother’s cheap ways; because he knows it will be a long time before he can get a new jacket. As much as he despises the jacket, he thanks his mother and wears it to please her.…

Chapter 2 of The New Jim Crow focuses on how the system of mass incarceration works. Alexander concentrates on the "War on Drugs," because "convictions for drug offenses are the single most important cause of the explosion in incarceration rates in the United States." Early on, she exposes myths, noting that the war is not "aimed at ridding the nation of drug 'kingpins' or big-time drug dealers," and the drug war is not "principally concerned with dangerous drugs" (60).…

Although her fur scarf is used as a companion it is also used to represent herself. In the beginning of the story, the scarf coming out of its box with sad eyes compares to Miss Brill going out to the park and being sad internally. “What has been happening to me (Charters, 583)?,” says the scarf. This is also Miss Brills wondering how she got to where she is now in life. She wondered how she became so displeased with her life. The last example of the scarf is in the last sentence of the story. Miss Brill goes to put away her fur scarf after being ridiculed. When she put the scarf away she thought she heard something crying. When that is first read, one might think of it as a quick joke because it became personified. However, the crying was in fact symbolizing Miss Brill, who was feeling desolate when what she valued was torn down. The band that plays throughout the story was also used as symbolism. On page 583, Miss Brill thinks the band sounds louder and happier because more people are out that Sunday. She was happier to see that more people were out in the garden and she would not be as lonely that day. She was able to have the music represent her without having to actually say what she was…

She tries to hide her "emotional isolation, by pretending she is a cast member in a stage production" (Mansfield 260). Miss Brill's only friend is her fur coat. She notices every detail among it, like the feel of the fur, the sad eyes, and the nose, which is not firm anymore. She even named the fur "Little Rogue." She has become accustomed to talking to it, and pretending it is talking to her: "'What has been happening to me?' said the sad little eyes" (259). Miss Brill does not talk about any family or friends during her time on stage; however, she was disappointed that "the old man in a velvet coat," and "a big old woman did not speak" (259). This shows her loneliness as well because "Miss Brill always looked forward to the conversation" (260). She also developed a habit that…

    1. The quilts have always proved to be a source of comfort and encouragement to Maggie who is described by the mother as "homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, [who is always] eying her sister with a mixture of envy and awe." and a little later as, "she has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house to the ground." So a girl like Maggie who is timid and not successful in life like her sister will have great regard for the tradition and the culture of her past.…
