A Dream Deferred To begin, what is symbolism? Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by: Lorraine Hansberry shows symbolism throughout the play in three different symbols Light, Plant, and Window. But in this essay it will only be talking about the light and how it changes over time. In this play it focuses on one family and that is the Younger family. In the family there is Momma, Ruth, Walter, Travis, and Beneatha. They are a struggling family because they live on the Southside of Chicago in a small apartment and they have little to no money. The light is a symbol of dreams and the future. Throughout this play it changes from dreams and then it goes to them thinking about the future.
One example of symbolism, is in act 1 scene 1 is on Page 24 and it says “ The sole natural light the family may enjoy in the course of the day is only that which fights it's way through this little window.” Describing the setting. Light “has to fight”. This quote shows that the light has potential and it’s describing the near future because they are waiting every day for a check to come so they can have a better life. So they call Linder and Walter is talking to him and then like throughout the conversation it’s like Walter changes his mind and they decide to move. In the final part of the play the light is the house because that is there future. So they start moving and then Momma tells Ruth to go down and she’ll be right behind her. Then Momma takes one last look at the apartment.
All in all, the light changes a lot throughout the play as you can see. The way it changes makes their mood different. The light symbolizes the Younger family’s future and dreams. The light was a really good symbol to use because it can say or mean a lot when you watch the
