A Raisin In The Sun Dream Essay
The book A Raisin in the Sun had many themes, motifs, and symbols. Value/Purpose of dreams (theme), Home (Motif), and Mama’s Plant (symbol) had many similarities and differences. Value/Purpose of dreams are each of the Younger’s dreams throughout the play. Beneatha wanted to be a doctor, Walter wanted to buy a liquor store to start a business, Mama wanted to own a garden, Travis wanted to be a bus driver, and Ruth wanted to get out of the “rat trap.” When the Youngers fail to make their dreams reality they realize that the most important dream is the new house because it unites the family together. Mama’s Plant symbolizes the growth of the family and her care for the family. Home is the main setting throughout the play. The Home’s lighting …show more content…
Home and Value/Purpose of dreams were very common. The Home was very small. The Youngers felt cramp in the Home. Ruth’s dream is to own a bigger and better place to live in. Home and Mama’s PLant was very common too. Mama raise the plant in the Home. Mama couldn’t own a garden in her apartment. Mama then got a plant to represent her dream. Mama is taking care of her dream. Home and Value/Purpose of dreams were different. The Home is in the ghetto and is very small. MAma wants to out of the ghetto and into a house with a yard where Travis can play and where she can tend a garden. Home and Mama’s PLant are different too. Mamas Plant represents her care for children. The apartment is too small and cramp. The Youngers have to share rooms because that’s how small the Home is. Mama wants her and her family to live in a better place.
There were many themes, symbols, and motifs in Raisin in the Sun. Mama’s Plant, Value/Purpose of dreams, and Home had many similarities and differences. Symbols, themes, and motifs help readers to comprehend the underlying messages that the writers intend to communicate to them. The symbols, themes, and motifs in Raisin in the Sun help me notice the messages. We should work hard to make our dreams become

    Everybody had dreams and aspirations, however those things never always go as planned. This happens to the characters in the play, A Raisin in the Sun. The play was written by Lorraine Hansburry, and it was the first Broadway play written by an African American woman. In the play, the Younger family, a family of five, live in a small two-bedroom apartment in Chicago. Mama, Lena, is about to receive an insurance check from her husband's death in the mail and has to decide what she is going to do with it. The check is seen as a beacon of hope to change their family's lives and make it much easier. Lena's son, Walter, wants to use it to leave his old job as a chauffer for a white man and invest in a liquor store, while Lena's daughter, Beneatha, wants to use it to help pay for her education to become a doctor. In the end, Mama entrusts some money to Walter and decides to buy a house in a white neighborhood to better accommodate their family because Walter's son had been sleeping on the living room couch. Walter's wife, Ruth, also goes through her own problems when she learns that she is expecting another child in a household that is already having a hard time getting by. A Raisin in the Sun is a great play that encompasses many themes of the African American working class culture in the United States.
