A Psychopath In Shakespeare's Othello
What do you think of when you hear the word “psychopath”? A masked man, an axe-wielding menace; How about the ensign of the Venetian army? This is the story of, a manipulative mastermind, who not only manipulated his way to murder but obtained the name “honest Iago” in the process.
First, what makes a Psychopath “a Psychopath”? It is first important to distinguish between a psychopath and a sociopath. “Psychopath’s can be unremorseful killers, although they are unable to form emotional attachments, they have the able to gain people’s trust with their charm and empathy, utterly hiding their true self” Harvard University Psychologist Dr. Seike comments. “They are well educated, plan their killings carefully and ultimately are able to manipulative

Although uncommon, the love between the Black African Prince Othello and Elegant Desdemona was as beautiful as the city itself. Iago’s relationship with Othello, however, was not as beautiful. Othello, appointed the general of the Venetian army, chose his lieutenant that day. His choice, however, did not fall in Iago’s favor. Instead of picking the war-seasoned Iago, he picked a Michael Cassio, a man who had never set foot upon the battle field. This automatically made Iago his Ensign. “It is evident that Iago felt jealous that night, and this jealously may have been his motives against Othello”, Dr. Seike …show more content…
He is being held for trial without bail, in a small concrete room with a large metal door and a small plastic window. Seems fitting for a killer. As the guards lift the small metal voice hatch, his voice cut through the thick air where he spoke chilling words, “I hate the moor. Did you know he slept with my wife? A wife for a wife I guess, I’m glad they both died”. The interview continued with similar chilling answers, “they would all believe me, hence my name honest Iago, and Roderigo? I profited greatly from that love-sick animal, it was great fun, but in the end, he had to go, couldn’t let him ruin my plan”.
What we learn from the interview is that Iago’s intentions were unclear. “I am unsure whether he killed for sport, profit, for revenge, out of jealously or all combined” Seike comments. Cassio cannot blame himself, Iago was a master at manipulating others, his plan succeeded because he could hide his intentions and obtain people’s trust. “The fine line of trust can be drawn, where the line is more jagged than straight” Dr. Seike concludes. “Like Iago, you never know who could be a psychopathic

What is a psychopath? How would we describe a psychopath? Although people may have a different opinion of the description of a psychopath, there are some aspects that most people will agree on. From our understanding, psychopaths are impulsive, ego-centric, and sometimes violent individuals, who lie and manipulate others for their own personal gain. At the same time, psychopaths can be charming which explains how they manage to easily manipulate others. The most intriguing characteristic, however, is the lack of conscience within a psychopath. We can all agree, it seems as if psychopaths feel no remorse or guilt after exhibiting their…

Iago, in his soliloquies, informs the audience of his plans to deceive Othello and bring about his fall from grace. It is his use of language, rhythm, length and delivery that cause the greatest impact, instilling fear into the audience and creating a sense of tragic inevitability as Iago’s plans will come to fruition, with no one to stop them. The dangerous thing about Iago is that he not only brings down Othello, but he also wrecks anyone else that he can along the way.…

From the onset of Othello, the audience is unknowingly subject to Iago’s manipulative customs. Despite being a stereotypical Shakespearian antagonist, Iago is a complex, two faced, yet three dimensional, character. Despite being an eponymous play, suggesting Othello’s importance, his absence in light of Iago’s presence allows the audience to be influenced and therefore misled by Iago’s representation of Othello…

In the play, “Othello” Iago provided clues that he was going to destroy Othello. In Act I, Scene 1, Iago and Rodrigo (a gulled gentle man) were talking about the promotion of Michael Cassio (Othello’s Lieutenant) and he (Iago) should have been the one to receive the promotion. Iago states “One Michael Cassio, a Florentine (A fellow almost damned in a fair wife) that never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows more than a spinster; unless the bookish theoric, wherein the togged consuls can propose as masterly as he”. He means that Cassio is not married and that he has no experience of leading troops into the battlefield, because Cassio has not gone into war. Iago is jealous that he was did not receive that promotion and he his disloyalty towards Othello. Othello were reference as him, Moor (black) and thick-lips according to the definition in the play it means “An Elizabethan epithet for blacks, including Moors”. Iago did not approve of Othello and Desdemona’s elopement. Iago informed Brabantino (Desdemona’s Father) of her daughter’s marriage to Othello, he states, “I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs”. Iago is also an instigator; he wanted to get…

You have heard that a psychopath has a hard time understanding a person’s emotions. Well, it is true. A psychopath is also conning, manipulative, has superficial charm, grandiose self worth, and poor behavioral self worth. I have read Othello, by Shakespeare, and I believe Iago is a psychopath. There is proof he has a lack of remorse and guilt. Although Shakespeare has never stated that Iago is a psychopath, quotes and evidence lead to him being one. I have also read articles with important information, and evidence that shows how Iago acts like a psychopath.…

The envy and hatred he felt was one that could be related to that of a devil for being such evilness. Cassio, the weapon to come between Othello and Desdemona, became also a victim of Iago’s schemes while being so young and innocent. The mechanics which Iago used to show his envy and hatred toward Othello went farther than would be expected. Despite the fact that he saw that Othello grew furious and very jealous when he heard that Cassio and Desdemona were having an affair, and that he wanted to kill Cassio, it did not occur to Iago to take a step back and analyze what he was doing and how it can affect others including causing the death of innocent Cassio who trusted in him. Eventually, in turn, it ended up causing the tragic death of three innocent people including his wife Emilia, Othello and…

Psychopath is actually different from sociopath. According to Professor Alan Basham from EWU’s Psychology Department, psychopath is more like an advance version of sociopath. They don’t have capacity to feel attachment, empathy or shame. They simply don’t care about the others. They are even capable of killing their friends or families. Sociopaths are not necessary killers. They manipulate to gain their own benefit but still can feel emotional attachment to other individuals. The sociopath will still lack empathy and attachment for society and won’t feel guilt harming a stranger or breaking the law in any form, but won’t lack empathy for those to whom he feels attached.…

In the final scene of Othello, Iago has been unmasked as the villain responsible for Othello's desperate act; there is no escape for him. Yet he spurns Othello's demand of an explanation, and, despite the threat of torture, maintains an obdurate silence. That silence, however, is not the mere bravado of a “Sparton Dogge”; it is the logical and ultimate fulfillment of Iago's boast to Roderigo in the opening scene:…

Being a psychopath is categorized under the personality disorder, psychopathy. Psychopathy is when antisocial behavior brings manipulated and deviated thoughts, and also lying. The most common characteristics of a classified psychopath would be someone who lacks emotion, empathy, and guilt. Every time a psychopath may kill someone, afterwards they do not feel bad about anything they had done. In Shakespeare’s “Othello” the character Iago is considered to be the most dangerous of villains. He is a genuine schemer and manipulator, as he is often referred to as “honest Iago”, showing his skills at deceiving other characters so that not only do they suspect him but rely on him for the help that he promised to give. Iago repeatedly betrays other characters while keeping up his reputation as being an honest and noble man. His true thoughts are only revealed through his soliloquies. Iagos soliloquies shows he is searching for motives that he can’t find and only does the terrible things he does to benefit himself, which is inherently evil.…

ADMIRABLE is the preparation, so truly and peculiarly Shakspearian, in the introduction of Roderigo, as the dupe on whom Iago shall first exercise his art, and in so doing display his own character. Roderigo, without any fixed principle, but not without the moral notions and sympathies with honour, which his rank and connections had hung upon him, is already well fitted and predisposed for the purpose; for very want of character and strength of passion, like wind loudest in an empty house, constitute his character. The first three lines happily state the nature and foundation of the friendship between him and Iago,— the purse,—as also the contrast of Roderigo's intemperance of mind with Iago's coolness,—the coolness of a preconceiving experimenter. The mere language of protestation—…
