A Patient Experience
A patient experience that stands out as significant is the day I had an exchanged patient from a different country. This patient came in because part of her tooth fell out. When she pointed to the tooth, I saw she had a huge carious lesion. I told her to get a dental exam so the dentist can diagnose the suspicious disease. She refused to get a dental exam because the dentist was not going to fix her tooth that same day. I told her about Open Door and she agreed to a call them. During that visit, she told me that if she had a cleaning, was the “yellow stuff” going to come off her teeth. I explained to her that the yellowish hard deposits would be removed with the cleaning, but that she needed to get a dental exam because she had more suspicious areas. That same day, I did a prophylaxis on her and once I was done, I gave her the mirror and showed her were the yellowish hard deposits were once at. …show more content…
I told her that as a hygienist, I am not trained to remove that suspicious area, that’s the dentist job. She wasn’t that happy. A week later she messaged me saying that she wanted another cleaning because she wasn’t satisfied with the cleaning she had a few days ago. She told me she was still seeing the yellowish stains on top of her teeth. I explained to her that she didn’t need another cleaning because I had removed all the hard deposits from her teeth. Like before, I explained to her that she needed to get a dental exam to get those suspicious areas looked at. This patient stands out as significant because I learned a lot from her. I noticed that it is hard for people to understand the difference between the role of a hygienist and the role of a dentist. Also, I learned that not everyone can easily be educated about oral hygiene it takes patience and

Julianna has explained the five patterns of enabling as described by the text, and I would like to use an example for enabling based on a situation that I was thrown into professionally. I once had a forty-something year old (Patient A) patient that presented to the ED as a heroin overdose. The patients seventy-something year old mother called EMS after finding her son unresponsive on the bedroom floor. Patient A was a well known poly substance abuser that preferred heroin to achieve his high, but would use ANYTHING in its place, he has overdosed at least 7 times during my time in the ER. His mother a frail women, would "ride in" with the ambulance each time (stroking his head and telling him "everything will be okay"), instructing the ER staff to "opt…

After doing an assessment on my client, I felt very sympathetic for her with her diagnosis. My client stated that she was trying all of the methods that the hygienist had recommended for her over the past years. The client has been fighting with a habit that she has numerous times tried to quit, but was unsuccessful. From her habit, her oral tissue and healing will continue to delay until she is ready to quit or seeks professional help. I let my client know that I understood her frustration and informed her that we are here to help or that she would want to seek medical help from her…

One of the deep cleaning I observed was a patient with infection. I was extremely surprised to see the patient bleed during the cleaning. I think that visiting the dentist on a regular basis is very important because he or she keep their teeth clean and healthy. I could realize many patients discovered about their teeth’s condition through cleaning. I was able to see Dr. Sim perform many root canals, crowning teeth, and filling cavities during three days. Through shadowing I learned that being a dentist and dental hygienist are a very important position with lots of responsibility to their patients. It was time to learn again how important trusts between the doctor and patients. I believe that when patients develop this trust, they are more likely to comply with doctors’ recommendations and therefore get better care. This shadowing helped me realize the importance of good relationships between employer and employees. I can see they always had each other to rely on for help. I was impressed by the excitement and enthusiasm they had for their jobs, and for the company as a whole. I have not decided where to work after graduation. If I work, I felt inclined to work in such a pleasant work…

In this candidate’s facility, shift report is being done away from the patient bedside, usually at the nurses’ station, in a doctor’s charting room or outside of the patient’s room in the hallway. While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…

The patient Mr. Smith was diagnosed with prostate cancer 5 years ago. It seemed as if his condition was worsening so he visited his physician who performed a physical examination on him. A physical examination has many components they include observing the signs of a disease by checking for signals like change in skin pigment or alertness. Then there is checking vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and temperature by comparing your results to a standard. Next step the stethoscope is used to listen to the lungs, bowel movement and the heart that process is called auscultation. The procedure called palpitation is using fingers and applying pressure to check for abnormalities in the organs. Lastly there is percussion which isn’t used very much it involves tapping on the chest checking to see if the lungs are in good shape.…

The last two weeks of clinical has been amazing. It was interesting to see and do various things thought out the clinical placement such as administering TB skin test and reading it two days later, being able to immunize multiple babies under the age of 2 years old, being independent with the influenza clinics, and being independent with the needle exchange program clients (N.E.P). It was very enjoyable clinical experience which I learned lots from the nurses at Public Health.…

Plastered on the walls are dramatic “Before/After” photos. They show yellow teeth, set crookedly in red raw gums becoming brilliantly white and straight. The walls are painted a stark, clinical white, however photographs of people with toothy grins beam down at me, from newspaper clippings over the years. It must be my imagination, but already I can taste the slightly stale, bubblegum flavoured gloves, the cool hard metal of the examining probe, and the chink clink it makes when it sometimes collides with my teeth. I can feel the vinyl of the reclining chairs, which are covered in plastic, and also which clammy legs have a habit to stick to. In my mind I see the perfect teeth of my dentist, an ideal advertisement for his clinic.…
