A Close Study Of Odysseus In Homer's Odyssey
This is the passage after Cyclops refuges to welcome them warmly with the gifts, ignores Odysseus and sleeps. Odysseus and his companions are strangers for him and other people of the place. They are not guest friendly. When Cyclops just refuses to provide gift, he becomes mad at them. He feels Athena will never give him glory if he does not take the revenge with Cyclops, thus he blinded Cyclops. Not only this when Odysseus goes to the kingdom of the dead, he says Achilles, ‘But you Achilles, there’s not a man in the world more blest than you—there never has been, never will be one. Time was, when you were alive, we Argives honored you as a god, and now down here, I see you lord it over the dead in all your power. Odysseus feels Achilles as

Odysseus, in The Odyssey by Homer, and I both demonstrate determination in many different ways. The first example is when they stopped at the land of the Lotus Eaters. The men that ate the lotus wanted to stay on the land because they were addicted to the lotus, but Odysseus, the great leader, would never let that happen. He said, “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches” and told the rest not to eat the Lotus or they would lose their wishes of wanting to return home (898). This shows Odysseus’s committed and driven state of mind in the way that he would not leave any man behind, and he knew he needed to help them up on the ship and return them home safely. In addition, Circe warned Odysseus…

In the epic myth The Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus takes a twenty year long and perilous journey back to his homeland Ithaka. He must face many physical and mental challenges that makes him worthy of being a hero. The physical qualities that possess an epic hero include immense gallantness and dexterity. This can be seen when “Odysseus had blinded god-like Polyphemus, the mighty cyclops who was Poseidon’s son” (Rosenberg 78). Cyclopes are gigantic and man-eating. To face such a powerful, terrifying monster one must be extremely valiant, a trait that as you can see Odysseus possesses. A task like this also reguires a lot of skill, one must be clever because strength alone will not suffice against a Cyclops. The mental traits that epic…

Malala Yousafzai said, “We were scared, but our fear was not as strong as our courage.” To some people, courage is seen in everyday acts of bravery. When a person does what seems to be a brave act during a calamity, without proper training, it is not bravery. It. Is. Courage. Courage is doing something that is dangerous and noble, but not irrational. It should also make you a better person, or the world a better place.…

The author states: “So they spoke, (…) Cyclops, if any mortal man ever asks you who it was that inflicted upon your eye this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus (…) ”.(Book 9) All the obstacles overcome by Odysseus were really for the prize of coming home to glory and power of his kingdom. This is similar to the rise to power of Greece after the Dark Age in which they faced many difficulties. Greece often found itself in wars. (most among themselves) This included wars such as the Greco-Persian war, Peloponnesian war, and the Corinthian war. Greece overcame these conflicts and later reached success, becoming a global empire. Ancient Greeks also believed that everything in their life was being controlled by the Greek gods, so it was no wonder that they tried their best to honor and obey them. Odysseus did his best to obey Helios the sun god by not eating his sacred cattle. Odysseus states: “Let us mind, therefore, and not touch the cattle.” (Book 12) Even though in the end his men DID eat the cattle, Odysseus stayed obedient and was spared. In a…

The gods have played their part altering the course of the hero’s voyage. Seemingly, in the epic harmony does not last long and challenges follow Odysseus like a plague. Calypso, the audience believes holds the last installment of the global journey, our hero has yet more battles ahead of him. In fact, the king of Ithaca wandered the Mediterranean and its coastal lands for 10 years before finally arriving home. As waves crash against the raft, “he was seen sailing the ocean”(284). The sea near the land of the Phaeacians is only one region Odysseus has been driven to. All these occurs as a number of loyal citizens and a hopeful family await his return, a period when others dependence on him shines through. As Odysseus is under the angry waters…

When Odysseus offers Zeus a prized Lamb’s thighbones, he refuses them, and Odysseus realizes his mistake. He states that “Zeus disdained my offering, destruction for my ships he had in store and death for those who sailed them.” He wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, which told Odysseus that he would have no guidance or protection from him; they would have to take the journey on alone. It was then that Odysseus knew that the voyage home would be difficult, and that he would have to prove himself by adhering to the god’s advice. The fact that Odysseus does not have Zeus on his side is extremely important, it means that Odysseus would have to prove himself by acting with restraint, the men’s lives depended on it. When Odysseus had a chance to return home with the remaining crew, he was still inclined to disobey the gods thinking that he could fight his way out of his destiny, something for which Circe berated him, saying, “Must you have battle in your heart forever? The bloody toil of combat? ...will you not yield to the immortal gods?” Odysseus is a fighter, and believes that he is above all, which shows that he still will not “yield”, or admit he’s not equally great. This trait is the root of the issues that arise in the epic tale, and causes the gods to be filled with disdain towards him. It is also the cause of the men’s demise, because of his arrogance, he ruins his chances of…

Odysseus is not an admirable character, he is egotistical, injudicious, and unbelievably narrow-minded. Odysseus may seem to be the impeccable deity to praise, who would not wish to worship an undeniably tenacious human being who slaughtered a bountiful amount of monsters and conquering any woman he desires. But is that just the beginning of the negative traits he owns? In the Odyssey, you may find yourself applauding Odysseus for his courageous actions and being able to overcome any task, no matter how problematic and challenging it may seem. Nevertheless, you may also pinpoint the unfavorable qualities Odysseus possesses.…

In almost all of the stories that have been written, there is a journey that the character undertakes to become whole and balanced, also known as the heroic journey. In the first stage of the journey, the departure, the hero leaves their known world and begins their adventure. After the hero undergoes the departure, they then move on to the next stage, the initiation, where they are put through tests and venture into the world of hero or magic or the previously unknown. The third and final stage is that of the return, where the hero must return back to his home. A perfect example of someone that underwent the heroic journey is Odysseus from the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer because he had undergone a journey that included a departure, initiation, and return.…

I let another man take me to bed and let him control me, as if I were a weakling. I had known that Odysseus wouldn't stay, but how could I resist him? I swore an oath and now I pay the consequences. As a result I am no longer a powerful sorceress but a lonely woman, a lame whore waiting for Odysseus to love me back.…

journey also started mine. While following Odysseus I learned many things, one of them being, family is the most important thing. Odysseus defeats all his enemies and overcomes all obstacles in order to return to his wife Penelope and son Telemachuse. He was brave when he fought and he was smart, always making plans ahead of time. His journey also taught me to be patient; Odysseus waited ten years to be reunited with his family.
