Colleges Athletes Should Not Get Paid
There has been a lot of controversy around colleges regarding athletes. Some athletes feel that they should get paid to play sports. One the other hand, schools think they should not. This topic is an ongoing debate, but the final conclusion is left to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). However, there are many factors on why student-athletes do not deserve to get compensated. College athletes are some of the hardest working individuals around. Athletes have a routine that includes brutal practices, intense games, and difficult college courses. College athletes carry a tremendous weight on their shoulders. Many individuals have their arguments in support of each side. College athletes should not get paid for their performance because their sport is not their job. Athletes think they should get paid so they can help out their families. Schools should not compensate for some that they have no control over if the student athlete does not have money to take care of their family. In the University Star, Molly Block points out that many athletes argue that because they do not have time to get a job, they should be paid by the university and have extra money to go out with friends or afford new clothes. However, many college students are broke and deal with inconveniences on a daily basis. Not being able to afford things is a way of college life (Block 4). If this is the case the athlete can get a part-time or they can even quit. It’s their choice to choose what’s best accommodating them. Author Kenneth Cooper, says “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports” (Cooper 1). The NCAA feels that it is more of a privilege because they are very lucky to play college level than most people. They should feel blessed because they get this offer one in a lift time.
