2.4. Diversity, Equality and Inclusion
TDA Unit 204 Equality, diversity & inclusion in work with children & young people [1.1].In your setting, there is a range of policies which formally sets out guidelines and procedures for ensuring equality. The policies must take into account the rights of all individuals and groups within the school as well as considering the ways policies work to ensure equality, inclusion. Policies also pay regards to the values and practice, which are part of all aspect of school life.

United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Children (1989) UNCRC states the rights of all children and young people. The UK government ratified the treaty in 1991 and must ensure that the rights of children in the UK are protected through law. These rights are extensive and include the right to education and right to have their views respected.
The convention gives children and young people over 40 substantive rights, including the right to:
Special protection measures and assistance.
Access to services such as education and healthcare.
Develop their personalities, abilities and talents to the fullest potential.
Grow up in an environment of happiness, love and understanding.
Be informed about and participate in achieving their rights in an accessible and active manner.
Below are a list of relevant legislation, which forms a basis for government statutory codes of practice and frameworks and school policies and procedures relating to equal opportunity and inclusive practice.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995
Protects the rights of all those with disabilities. It also places a duty on schools and other organisations to eliminate barriers to ensure that individuals can gain equal access to services.

Disability Discrimination Act 2005
Places a duty for schools to produce a Disability Equality Scheme (DES) and an Access Plan. Schools must encourage participation in all aspects of school life and eliminate harassment and unlawful discrimination.
