As seconds ticked away, the celebration began in full force(Coffey, 1993).The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team was the best hockey team of all time. They were the best hockey team because of their new coach, conditioning, winning games, and their win against the Soviet Union.
The U.S.A. got a new coach for the olympics, Herb Brooks, and he wanted to make some changes. The coach for the USA is Herb Brooks who is a college coach for the University of Minnesota(Coffey, 1993). Herbs dream to make the Olympics did not come true because he was one of the final cuts. The U.S. was under a lot of pressure because of some bad stuff going on across the ocean.Team USA decided to do a practice game against the Soviets at Madison Square Garden and got theirs butts kicked 10-3 (USA Hockey, 2018). The U.S. got their butts kicked by probably the best team in the world at the time. The Cold War and Soviet invasion of Afghanistan President Carter said they were going to boycott the summer olympics (Davis, 2005). If they boycotted the Summer Olympics then they would have had a chance to not go to the winter Olympics and none of this would have happened. The USA just got their ticket to a medal round and there are only 4 teams left: Soviet Union, Sweden, Finland, and USA. The competition was going to get a lot harder and they were not even promised a medal(Coffey,1993). Not even 2 weeks ago the Americans got whooped 10-3 against the Soviet Union and the whole team and the fans were hoping they wouldn't repeat that(Coffey,1993). They were about to face a powerhouse the Soviet Union. The Soviets were a really good team even though they started playing organized games 100 years after Canada. They had a record of 53-5-1 and won 7 gold medals from 1956-1988 (Coffey,1993). The team that they would play next was the Soviet Union who were so good that the players said that their hardest games were when they scrimaged in practice. They had many talented players like: Vladislav Tretiak who was called "The best puck stopper in the world" and then their Defenseman Valery Vasilyev who "rarely made mistakes" and then their team captain Voris Mikhailov who had a lot of talent. The Soviet Union team is the best team in the world for the Olympic Hockey because they have “The best puck stopper in the world” and some players who could not make mistakes. Coach Brooks had written on a pad before the game "You were born to be a player, You were meant to be here." The coach puts that on the pad to tell the players to not lose all hope before the game even started.
