Outcomes of Democracy
Democracy is better than others
We felt that democracy is better because it :
- Promotes equality among citizens.
- Enhance the dignity of the individual
- Improves the quality of decision making.
- Provides a method to resolve conflicts.
- Allows room to correct mistakes.
- The countries which have formal constitutions, they hold elections and form govts.
- They guarantee rights of citizens.
- Democracy solves the social and political and economic problems of the country.
Topic - 2 : Accountable responsive and Legitimate Govt.
Accountable Govt. : Democracy is a accountable govt because it is the govt. of the people and made by people and for the people. The representatives elected by the people are responsible to them. If the people are not happy with the govt they can change the leaders in coming elections.
Responsive Govt. : A citizen who wants to know if a decision was taken through the correct procedures can find this out. She has the right and the means to examine the process of decision making. This type of transparency is not available in non democratic govts.
Legitimate Govt. : Democratic govt is legitimate govt.
It may be slow, less efficient, not always very responsive or clean. But a democratic govt is people’s own govt’s can not ignore the needs of people.
So people wish to be ruled by representatives elected by them.

1. Give the definition of democracy?
2. How democracy is better than other types of govt.?
3. How does democracy produce an accountable, responsive and legitimate govt.
4. “democracy depends on political equality”. clarify this statement.

    In the famous words of Sir Winston Churchill, “No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” As a staunch supporter of democracy, Churchill is admitting that although there may be a variety of flaws in a democratic government, it is still a far more suitable choice of governing as opposed to alternate forms of government. Widely accepted as the most popular and working form of government, democracy is, in a nutshell, a political system in which the power is given to the popular vote of the people. In fact, the very origins of the term democracy hail from the Greek term for ‘ruled by the people’. The basic form of our modern democratic system originated in Greece as a polar-opposite alternative to a dictatorship. This form of democracy is by far the most purest in its original form as there were no elected representatives, and every eligible citizen voted on all issues in the government. Unfortunately, women and slaves were not considered eligible to vote at this time even though they made up more than 50% of the population. Despite this, the basic principle that the power of the government is directly influenced by every eligible citizen was most strongly incorporated at that time. Nowadays, many of our modern democratic governments have altered this form of government by electing a few official representatives to vote on issues which makes many of our modern democracies more of an elected oligarchy as opposed to being a democracy. The question at hand then, is what the benefits of this modern form of democracy are as well as the issues and potential problems that a democratic society would have to face.…

    I believe Canada does not have a true democracy. Canada does not exhibit three of eight elements of democracy: political equality, common good and human dignity. One of the elements of having a democracy is political equality. Political equality is when every citizen has the right to vote and run for office and to speak on public issues. However the requirement to be able to vote and run for office in Canada is you must be a Canadian citizen and be above the age of 18. I think that people under 18 should at least be able to vote on issues and who their leader will be. The reason I think this, is because a lot of the issues we have to deal with also affect kids under 18. When it comes to educational issues people under 18 should have the right to vote because these are the issues that affect them the most. I think the least non-Canadian citizens should have the right to is the ability to vote for their leader. Despite the fact that they may not have been in Canada for long it is still where they live and they should therefore have the right of say in issues affecting their country and them. The second element, common good, means that democratic citizens work towards what will make the most people safe secure and happy. It means that they will have a sense of responsibility and caring for others. As much as some Canadians citizens will deny, there is not equal common good for the people of Canada. In Canada there are millions of families that struggle everyday just to make ends meet. There are so many people that are just under the line of poverty. However many of these low income earning families are not getting help and are expected to fend for themselves. A study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found that Aboriginal Canadians made 30% less income than their non-aboriginal Canadian counterparts, in terms of salary.
