1. State the difference between chemically defined and complex media in your own words. (2) Chemically define is a media that is pure and contains specific compounds from either organic or inorganic. Also, chemically define media is a chemical composition that is known. On the other hand, Complex media is a complex media that is unknown and is usually not a chemically pure.

Describe the precise chemical (or physical) reactions that produce these patterns of bacterial growth in each case. (That is, say WHY these results occur). Some of the information is available in your lab manual but for others you may have to do some research to find out the answers.

Description of chemical or physical reaction
E. aerogenes colonies on EMB are pink

E. aerogenes ferments lactose in the medium to produce acid. This lowers the pH and the dyes in the medium it turn pink
PEA prevents gram negatives from growing

PEA prevents the growth of Gram-negative organisms by disrupting the structure of lipids in the Gram-negative membrane. It also can hamper protein synthesis.

Hemolysis is displayed on blood agar plates

On the plate the bacteria produces enzymes called hemolysins these enzymes lyse the red blood cells to certain degrees. Bacteria the fully lyse the blood go through beta-hemolysis. Bacteria that partially lyse the blood go through alpha-hemolysis, and bacteria that doesn’t lyse at all goes through gamma hemolysis.

    This report discusses an experiment that was done to demonstrate the effects of lysozyme on populations of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Bacteria have a cell wall composed of peptidoglycan that gives the wall its strength. Gram negative bacteria have and extra component of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), that is stabilized with magnesium ions, to their cell wall that further protects them. When Gram positive bacteria are treated with lysozyme, the lysozyme breaks down the peptidoglycan, allowing the cell to rupture if it is in a hypotonic solution or change shape without rupturing if it is in an isotonic solution. The LPS of Gram negative bacteria protects the peptidoglycan from being affected by lysozyme. When Gram negative bacteria is treated with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), a chelator, this destabilizes the LPS allowing it to become permeable. The objective of this experiment was to demonstrate that lysozyme will cause bacteria cell walls to rupture, causing a decrease in population, depending on the osmolarity of its surroundings.…
