'Hoods' a Drama Production
The performance ‘Hoods’ by Barking Gecko Theatre Co. is a play about two young children, Jessie and Kyle, who create video game style situations to pass the time as they are left in the car by their mother. This play was performed at Thornlie Senior High School’s Performing Arts Centre on Friday the 1st of April 2011. It was a great honour to have this brilliant play shown to the high school students as it showed perseverance of the young children.

The play was written by Angela Betzien and directed by Leticia Ca’ceres. The actors were Sam Longley and Andrea Gibbs, Sam who played Kyle and Andrea who played Jessie.

The style in which the play was performed was presentational although there are some parts of realism because situations like these actually do happen. The actors played multiple characters and morphed into each one. The morphing shows visible changes of character. They had great versatility of characters and played each one with passion for the role. The facial expressions they used seemed to add to the way they acted and made us, as an audience believe their roles much more. Other presentational aspects include the use of direct address and poetic narration throughout the performance.

Jessie and Kyle’s mother leaves them and their baby brother (Troy) in the car as she went to the shops. Troy get sick and the children are fearful of their situation and go off to seek their grandmother. Their mother hadn’t actually forgotten about them but rather had been caught shoplifting for them and was taken away. The themes for ‘Hoods’ would be child neglect, poverty and domestic violence.

The playwright had the intention of telling these children’s story to the audience. As children they don’t have the ability to tell people their situation and get help like adults can. The intentions would be that they wrote the play with the intention of showing powerlessness, and making the characters feel vulnerable as they are so young and in situations we don’t

The characters: Tre Styles and Mookie are two young African-Americans in the films “Boyz N The Hood” and “Do The Right Thing” respectively. Both films were released around the same time period, with DO THE RIGHT THING being released in 1989, and BOYZ N THE HOOD in 1991. Both films are coming of age tales for Tre and Mookie, they both reside in a low-income, predominantly black neighborhood. Both films share a common theme: the idea of hopelessness and survival as a young black male in the “hood.” Both men are a product of what can only be described as “urban decay;” they are trying to find their place in a society that doesn’t care much for their well being or success. BOYZ N THE HOOD and DO THE RIGHT THING have a common message: that race relations in America during the early 90’s are abysmal, and there is little hope for success for a young black man in the ‘hood.…

Boyz in the Hood follows one particular group in South Central Los Angeles. Trey Styles along with his friends Ricky, Doughboy, and others all grew up in the same neighborhood living with various struggles, some in common. Trey moved to live with his dad at the age of 10, Ricky and Doughboy, half-brothers, lived across the street from him in a single parent household. Ricky was raised on the hope and spirit of his mother to be a football star. His brother Doughboy was not given the same hope and dreams from his mother. Trey was raised differently than his friends because he was being raised by a respectable male, Furious Styles. Furious helped prepare Trey for what the future may have in store for him, especially when living in the so called, “ghetto.” Although these characters were raised differently they still found strength in numbers, and stuck close together at a very young age. One example is when they are walking down the tracks and Ricky gets his football hustled from him. Doughboy tries to stick up for his brother even though he fails. They all stood together during that scene when they could have easily been killed by these older guys.…

The use of one-person performance is a strange and unusual quality in a play. This quality can be considered to be particularly difficult to perform and to understand; not only for the actor, but also for the audience – they have to imagine one person as each individual character. Considering this, The Escapists performance was quite well done, with clear transitions between each different character, and a brief introduction as the actor switched…

Boyz n the Hood is a vivid video representation of what life is like for those who live in the hood. There are two families that were the focus within the movie: The Styles and The Bakers. The director of the movie, John Singleton, wants his viewers to compare the lives of the individuals within the movie to their own lives so there could be a change in our society. He discretely expresses the importance of a good upbringing by a fatherly figure. I believe that this made the difference with the two families. It made all the difference to be brought up in the right circumstances.…

All three characters struggle with different internal issues which helps them grow as young men. Tre is a good student who has dreams of furthering his education by going to college. With guidance from his father, Tre learns responsibilty and character. Ricky is an outstanding athlete who is trying to earn a football scholarship to USC. He feels that sports is his only outlet to greatness. Ricky's brother Doughboy is an all around gangster that associates himself with violence, alcohol, and crime. Basically, Boyz in the Hood tells the story about life in South Central Los Angeles with the struggle of young black men as they turn to education, give into violence and drugs and hope high for college. “Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn. Sixteen years on the streets and you see a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to see.” (S.E Hilton, The Outsiders). In the Outsiders, Hilton demonstrates the rough life of gang living. In the story there many negative examples and consequences from the gang life, such as, “rumbles”, violent acts, and even tragic deaths. The gangs were small groups, within the community in which members were often loyal to each other, and to the gang as a whole. All member of the gangs seemed to have unconditional love for one another, and would sacrifice for each other, but shared in hatred and spite for the other group. This caused conflict within the community. Often the gang members would set aside their personal differences, to remain united, and loyal to the group.…

On Wednesday May 27thth, I attended a play produced by The Ohio State University Department of Theatre, written by Paula Vogel, and titled The Long Christmas Ride Home. I really enjoyed this play for it was creative, and easy to follow. The characters, the setting, and the music all came together to create a memorable play. This production was about a moment that changed one family’s life forever. It is a play with puppets, in which one could say its themes are revolved around sexuality, violence, along with abuse. There are three children named Stephen, Rebecca the eldest, and Claire the youngest. After a dispute that went on between Claire and Stephen, they broke the very expensive chain their father had bought for Claire. This amplifies the heated arguments that took place, and commenced the long Christmas ride home where their father proceeds to worsen the car ride by hitting their mother across the face. After this moment, the story freezes, and we are fast forwarded in time, in order to see the lives of these children on another Christmas night at a much older age. We see that the moment in the car ride home changed their lives forever, and because of that, they all found then similar situations on a cold Christmas night locked out of the house of their significant other watching or hearing them with another person, and ignoring them. We are introduced to each of their sexualities; Claire, and Stephen being homosexual, and Rebecca heterosexual. We see that Stephen dies from a sexually transmitted disease, and how Claire and Rebecca struggle with staying alive or happy.…

Klein (2005) highlighted that Children’s Theatre is often used to reinforce conceptual ideas that children have already learned by applying metaphoric concepts obtained from the play to their own experiences. This causes the child to be an active spectator by articulating their thoughts about the theme. However, he further emphasized that being able to create links between the metaphoric concepts and real-life situations does not necessarily mean that the child is able to transfer the lesson learnt to their own behaviors as they are still grasping the concept of causal connections. Such discrepancy was evident in When All Was Green where the overarching theme was highly relatable to children but, the underlying messages were too in-depth for them to conceptualize. The overarching theme of the play was environment whereas the underlying messages were saving the environment and remembering others’ deeds. The first message was shown through the urban city where the environment was manipulated to provide space for high rise buildings, papers were thrown away instead of recycling and factories released polluted air. The second message was reflected through the relationship between the character and the tree. The tree was always there for the character as he aged and in times of need such as in a storm. However, the character neglected these deeds when he was offered…
