The question: As information systems increase in complexity and comprehensiveness, ethical issues regarding accessing and using data from these systems are also increasing. What are some of these ethical issues? As information systems continue to evolve, citizens and organizations have also created a heightened awareness of the security and privacy issues that revolve around business continuity. There are questions about how will the business continue to operate if there was a breach or disaster. Almost every business has created a version of a privacy policy. This privacy policy is carefully monitored and analyzed by consumer groups and are holding companies accountable for their actions.
There are many ethical issues that are of concern to information systems, but I will concentrate on only four. As per the Management Information Systems Quarterly, these may be summarized by an acronym – PAPA. Privacy: What information about a person or one’s associations can be revealed to another? What must be kept secret and what can be revealed? Accuracy: Who is responsible for how accurate the information is? Also, who is to be held accountable if there are errors in the information provided and how will the injured person be made whole? Property: Who owns this information? Who owns the channels at which this information is to be transmitted? How and who should have access to this information? Accessibility: What information can a person or organization have privilege to obtain such private information? (Mason, 2014)
