The summer of 2007 seems like yesterday when I was finally given my ultimate chance to pursue my American dream -- after almost 7 years of uncertainty and distress. August of that year was the very month that the opportunity of a lifetime was finally at my reach. I was actually holding it in my own hands. There it was, my unique chance to build a future and claim a fulfilled life, embodied in a glossy plastic card with these powerful words in bold print: PERMANENT RESIDENT CARD. I was flushed with the same emotions a year later, while contemplating my associate of science diploma from Georgia Perimeter College, my BBA diploma from Mercer University less than 2 years after that, and recently, my 4 reports of passing results for the CPA exam. The thing is, ever since that day when I received my “green card”, a transformation took place within me. The fears and complexes of a young Ivorian male immigrant vanished, and left a void to be filled by a burst of courage and hope. It felt like a new beginning, and I was invigorated by an ardent will to explore and exploit all opportunities. I recognize those same fears and complexes in the faces of middle school international students during my Junior Achievement lectures. I can relate to their struggles with social adaptation and peer pressure. I strive to be a role model for those kids especially. I’ve been working for the same company for more than 5 years, starting from an entry-level position in customer service, and growing through 2 promotions into my current accounting role as an analyst in treasury. In exchange of my hard work and contributions to the company’s objectives, my employer Verizon Wireless has supported and sponsored me in my pursuit of higher learning. I am also an assiduous student; I treat my school work no differently than my profession.
