St. Alice is a very inspirational saint who spent her life with a spirit deeply embedded in humility and a kind heart. Born in 1204 in a tiny village in Brussels, called Shaerbeck, Alice was sometimes called Aleydis. At the age of seven, Alice decided to join a convent of Cistercian nuns called Camera Sanctae Mariae. Alice would spend the rest of her life in that convent.…

    St Augustine Fort

    • 403 Words

Upon approach, the fort looks simplistic as it overlooks the sea. A square building that could be anything from a fort, to an armory, to a storage center. The closer and closer you get, the more you realize its great size, and the intimidation factor sets in. Upon entrance, all the hidden secrets and true power of the fort is revealed. The square courtyard is surrounded by solid, windowless, concrete walls that tower 20 feet over you. Cannons line every side up top, ready to be wheeled into action against attacking forces. A small dome shaped tube is placed in a corner for a watchman to look out over the ocean, ready to spot anyone looking to intrude.…

    1. Throughout the structure, Saint Sophia, many earlier Roman architectural styles are reflected. First, there are many columns supporting other various parts of the building, most noticeable where they are accompanied by the arches. The arches happen to be another ancient Roman style (rather than post and lintel), present in many other Roman wonders like the Colloseum.…

    Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. It is said that he was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows. This is the most common artistic depiction of Sebastian; however, according to legend, he was rescued and healed by Irene of Rome. Shortly afterwards he criticized Diocletian in person and as a result was clubbed to death.[1] He is venerated in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.…

    Staggerford

Relatable. This is a word that I would personally use to describe “Staggerford”, by Jon Hassler. Hassler did a splendid job writing this novel, focusing on how the life of a middle aged high school English teach in Minnesota may be. Although this book is fiction, the perfect picture was painted in my head of Miles, the middle aged bachelor’s realistic life. Throughout this novel, I started to see many different hints of what may be to come further in the reading, disguised properly, although. There are many important characters that play special roles throughout this novel, and Miles Pruitt is the main focus of it all. Love, heartbreak and demise are the recurring themes scattered throughout this brilliant novel.…

    East St. Louis

Almost anyone who visits in the schools of East St. Louis, even for a short time, comes away profoundly shaken. These are innocent children, after all. They have done nothing wrong. They have committed no crime. They are too young to have offended us in any way at all. One searches for some way to understand why a society as rich and, frequently, as generous as ours would leave these children in their penury and squalor for so long-and with so little public indignation. Is this just a strange mistake of history? Is it unusual? Is it an American anomaly? Even if the destitution and the racial segregation and the toxic dangers of the air and soil cannot be immediately addressed, why is it that we can't at least pour vast amounts of money, ingenuity and talent into public education for these children?…

    St. Louis

This outing has influenced my view of St. Louis in many ways. Before this outing, I did not know that St. Louis was home to a large number of refugees. As mentioned in class, most of my time is spent in the SLU bubble, so I have never been exposed to the different ethnic cultures within the city. I enjoyed learning about the diversity within St. Louis, and I am excited to explore new ethnic restaurants. Also, this fact about St. Louis resonated with me, due to the fact that Des Moines is also home to many Bosnian refugees. I attended grade school with children who had traveled to America to escape the Bosnian Civil war. In fact, there is a community of Bosnian refugees that live a few streets away from me. As a child, I did not understand the classifications of a refugee or why they choose…

Most of the saints are remembered for some outstanding virtue or devotion which they practiced, but Jerome is frequently remembered for his bad temper! It is true that he had a very bad temper and could use a vitriolic pen, but his love for God and his Son Jesus Christ was extraordinarily intense; anyone who taught error was an enemy of God and truth, and St. Jerome went after him or her with his mighty and sometimes sarcastic pen.…

    Saint Benedict

The life of Saint Benedict dramatically shaped Christianity development through the impacts of Benedicts Law on monarchism and my ministry today. Saint Benedict was born in about the year 480 AD. Many of the milestones in Benedict’s life are approximations as is the year of his birth. The only dated event of his life was in 542 AD when he was visited by a king at Monte Cassino. We know that he was an older man when he was visited by this king because he died shortly after the visit. St. Benedict was born in Nursia which is now Norcia in the province of Ubbria. Many believe his father was a Roman noble. We do not know the names of Benedict’s father and mother. Benedict had a twin sister named Scholastica, who is also a saint. When Benedict came of age he was sent to school in Rome to learn to be a noble man. He became very disillusioned with the corruption in Rome and with the lack of discipline he noticed from his peers. He left Rome and his education in order to live in solitude and discern God’s will.…
