Maths Project with cuboid volume

Respected Teachers and Friends !!!!!!!

Kerala is a state blessed with lots of rivers and lakes !!!

As you know “Dams” are constructed across the water ways to control the flow or raise the level of water. (show the dams in the models

Dams are constructed either with earth, rock or cement concrete

Now a days most of the dams are constructed using concrete which is more expensive.

Therefore the cost of construction of even a smaller size dam involves spending of crores of rupees !!!!!!

So we should try to reduce the cost of construction of dams without compromising the storage capacity , OK

Do you know what is reservoir of a dam?

Yes, it is the storage area of water in a dam site. ( show the reservoir area in the models)

Now I am asking you a question !!!!

How can you calculate the quantity of water stored in a reservoir if I am giving you the length and the breadth of reservoir and the height of water stored in the dam?

Is it like a cuboid ? ( show the cuboid picture in the chart)

Yes it is like a cuboid

So the volume of water stored is length x breadth x height

Or, we can say base area of reservoir x height of

water stored

Now I am showing you three boxes having different base areas , (smaller , medium and bigger)

Let us imagine these boxes as different reservoirs

Now I am pouring one glass of water in each of the boxes

(Pour water in each of the boxes carefully)

Can you see which one is having more height or depth of water?

Yes, the smaller box, that is with lesser base area is having more height of water

From the above what can we conclude?

Any body?

For storing the same quantity of water :

    International River Network and Bujagali Dam Project Uganda, a country based in Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world. Less than 5% of the population of Uganda has access to electricity more because of poverty and low creditability and less because of lack of electricity.AES is considered to be one of the biggest companies in the world and the largest independent power producer is going to construct $530-million dam near Bujagali Falls on the Nile. Though the details of Bujagali Dum project such as the costs, the amount and terms of capacity payment and distribution of risks are kept confidential; economic calculations are not reliable – how do you know this, International River Network (IRN) has lot of concerns about socio-environmental issues (the costs of the project overcome the forecasts by about 300 mln the government of Uganda and the Word Bank still commit the project). In given conditions the project faces several problems including socio-environmental and economic miscalculations and issues regarding corruption which will make it reasonable to stop the project and to ho on with analysis and researches for alternative projects. 1. Bujagali Dam project is good/bad for the Ugandan people. Uganda’s GDP vs. other sub-Saharan countries’ GDP. Advantages: From the economic and social point of view the construction of Dam will increase economical welfare of Ugandan people by providing certain level of employment both during and after the construction.
