Encounter with God’s People

This experience is part of my most memorable happenings in my life. Meeting other people in an unexpected time and place. Asking their piece of trust and time to asks some questions is such a thrilling and a little bit awkward experience but honestly I really enjoy this activity with my classmates. By the way, the man that I’m with in the picture is Mr. Abraham. He is a tourist here in the Philippine. He is a designer, 24 years old, living in United Arab Emirates. He was with his family at that time I conduct an interview with him. He is a nice and approachable person. Honestly the time I approached him, He was wearing shades and during our interview he take off his shade and I was really captured in his pleasing eyes. He is really handsome with a good tone of voice. He’s religion is Muslim. I also like his sense of humor because, He didn’t tell me first his true age but when im going to write the first age that he said, he stopped me and asking me” am I really look like 21 years old?” and I say yes you do look younger than 21 and he really laughed about it. Another is that I share also that my mother was also converted into Muslim and he asked me and tapped my back while he is laughing at me, if I have also a plans to be converted into Muslim but I answered No. As the interview goes by about his personal information, I asked a question to Him. “So sir Abraham what is God for you?” and in a couple of second I share first about my belief in God. “ You know what sir I define God in our religion as like an air, Maybe I can’t see him personally but I can still feel him.” And he answer me back, “Yeah, you’re right. We believe in our religion that you can really feel Allah whenever he is mad because you’ve done something wrong or you will feel his

Many different groups today are seeking the sovereignty of Hawaii. The reason being that these mostly Native Hawaiian groups feel that they suffered a severe injustice when they were annexed into the United States against their own free will. They feel that since they were treated like objects rather than human beings with rights and emotions, they now deserve reparations. The intentions of the different groups vary. Some only want reparations in the form of money and acknowledgements of the inhuman acts that were committed against them and others want it in the form of independence for the island. However, restoring sovereignty to Hawaii would cause great injustices toward the non-natives living on the island today. So these groups should not be granted the sovereignty they are seeking.…

    Colonial Self Rule

From the outset, the English colonies population rapidly grew, along with the different kinds of people of diverse nationalities that had come from all over Europe for the freedom not offered in their homelands and for better opportunities. The colonists, however, were being ruled by a country an ocean away, and after years of development and flourishing under Britain’s rule, they were prepared both economically as well as politically to cut off British rule to gain the independence that would be theirs through rebellions, and eventually a revolution. Colonial self-rule, the Great Awakening, and the consequences of the French Indian War caused these English colonists to begin moving in the direction of declaring their independence.…

When we arrived to the place a lady was standing at the door welcoming people and passing out the bulletins for the service. This church was completely different than the church I go to. It was a normal building without any religious images, priest and nuns around. Everybody there was wearing regular clothing so I wasn’t able to tell who was the priest was, or pastor as they call the main person there. My friend introduced me to some of the people that were sitting next to us while we were waiting for the service to start. A man came up to me and introduce him self and welcomed me. He looked surprised to see somebody new in the church so he asked who I was. I introduced my self too and explained to him the reason I was there. Little did I know, he was the pastor of the church, Hugo Campos. He was glad and happy that I chose that church for my assignment and told me that I was welcome to go anytime I like.…

Growing up in the place where almost everybody was atheist, I have become increasingly curious about Islam, as a religion and the culture that comes along with it. As someone who has traveled and studied abroad, I always feel excited with meeting people from different backgrounds. But sometimes I sense that my lack of knowledge in some religion-related culture makes me hesitant in opening up topics during my discussion with foreign friends. Islam is a great religion with large number of followers (estimated 1.57 billion) (CNN). Although often underreported, China (my home country) actually has a sizable Muslim population living in Muslim neighborhoods across the country (Armijo). You cannot fully understand your country without understanding a major demographic group in the country. After the tragedy of 9/11, this religion was somewhat misunderstood by a proportion of public and media in some parts of the world. This also gave rise to the so called “Islamphobia” (Haddad). As someone not really interested in politics, I just wanted to get to know a culture that is seemly so different than mine but could be found right around the corner of my neighborhood. I hoped this would also give me a very different perspective about life and the world. Eventually, I chose a Friday Muslim prayer service to attend with my Muslim classmate. Coming back from such first-time experience, I would say this religion feels foreign but also familiar to me. I was shocked by the strong and genuine faith the followers showed, the genius creation of literal and architectural works in this religion, and the rich traditions they have kept for a long time. At the same time, I realized my daily life actually has something to do with this culture. Some of my favorite foods come from Muslim cuisine. The followers, once out of the mosque, are simply the nice neighbors…

A man sharing my bus seat kept on gazing me with a sly smile, or so I thought. Countless things were going in my head on how I need to be reacting in that situation. After a while, he started talking, asking me a couple of questions. At that moment, my mind went blank, I did not know how I should respond to those questions. It was quite surprising to see him giving me an ample amount of time, and waiting for me to speak without showing any form of exasperation. Recollecting my thoughts and holding my composure, I started answering hesitantly and anxiously hoping not to sound silly. However, gradually, we seem to be going along well and only when his bus stop arrived, I realized that we have been talking for more than twenty minutes. It was the first time as far as I could remember that I was able to interact with a stranger for such a long time without making any excuses for ending the…
