F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby.
Chapters 1-2.

1. ”In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. ‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’“ (1)

2. “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer. (12)

3. “‘Well, these books are all scientific,’ insisted Tom, glancing at her impatiently. ‘This fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will take control of things.’” (20)
1. This quote begins near the start of the novel. Nick’s father tells Nick that before he judges anyone he should keep in mind that not everyone has had as many advantages as he had. What this means is that Nick should be empathetic to others and consider their upbringing before chastising them. Nick says that his father’s advice has been in his head throughout his entire life since he first heard it. This makes me think that Nick swears by this advice and carefully adheres to it throughout his life. I want to know more about Nick and if he really does follow this advice because it seems like a very hard quote to stand by.

2. This quote just makes me want to know even more about Nick than before. The quote makes me think that perhaps this summer is Nick’s chance to be successful at something and that he wants to change something about his life. It is also telling us that the novel will be set (or at least start) in summer. The time this book was set in was the roaring twenties and the most exciting things happen in summer such as parties and going outside. This makes me think that the book will be very

Nick fails to accomplish his dream of fitting into the upper social class because he can’t seem to realize that people are flawed. This is shown when Nick states, “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money and vast carelessness” (Fitzgerald 187-8). Disgusted by their behavior, Nick begins…

First, neither Nick nor the text prove to be reliable. He affirms in the beginning of the novel, that he is not inclined to make judgements and also, that he is one of the few honest people he has ever known. As long as readers analyse the text, they realize that by the end of the story, he has not been that honest since he constantly judges people (except for Gatsby) and also, he does not have an honest behaviour because, for instance, he knows his own cousin Daisy is…

It is written from a viewpoint where we can see his pursuit for a fresh start which results in a growth of maturity. The author correlates that, “As he himself says in his narration, he came out East (where the novel takes place) with ideas about who he wants to be and wants to relate to the world, particularly the world of finance and fashionable society” (BookRags 1). When Nick first decided to move, he knew he needed a fresh start and advanced not knowing exactly what he wanted in life. One of his main justifications for moving was to start a new job in the bonds business. He also acquired new friends, a girlfriend, and a house of his own. After World War One, he moved from the Midwest to Long Island. Nick gets the privilege of being the only character that changes over the course of the novel. Magnificent clothes are sought after, fought over, and talked about. When a person dresses nicely, he or she is respected. It is possible that this respect could have been formed under false pretenses. Appearances can be fake and deceiving. Clothes can hide things other than skin. In the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses images of impressive clothing to mask despicable characters. Jordan Baker, Daisy Buchanan, and Jay Gatsby illuminate this theme with their posh clothing and corrupted minds.…

The strongest representation of Nick’s growing maturity is the fact that he realises that Tom and Daisy are both weak and gutless people. This understanding was only obtained when Nick looked for what was on the “inside”. The quote “They are careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...” is really powerful and Fitzgerald is warning…

Sisyphus, a Greek myth character, was condemned to push a giant boulder up a hill for eternity, only for it to return to the bottom before he can finish his task. Similarly, Tom, Daisy, Gatsby, Nick from The Great Gatsby, and even the 1920’s society itself move both forwards and backwards simultaneously as they navigate the waters of life. F. Scott Fitzgerald addresses this aphorism throughout the novel, and the final lines summarize it very thoroughly: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (Fitzgerald, 189). As described in the final lines of the novel, the main characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and the society in which they live portray the contrasting pull of life and the continual movement both forwards and back.…

“It’s a shallow life that doesn’t give a person a few scars”. This quote said by Garrison Keillor, metaphorically exemplifies the true meaning of hollowness and shallowness. Hollowness and shallowness were a major part of people’s characteristics in the 1920’s ‘easy money’ era because of the great economic boom. During this era, people earned their money by corruption with smuggling alcohol during prohibition. In addition, people earned their money by people unknowingly investing in major stocks. A few people earned their money with hard work; it was mostly made easily for them. Throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the shallowness and hollowness of the upper class is persistently shown. Hollowness and shallowness of the upper class are shown in The Great Gatsby through Tom’s disrespect and segregation for people in the lower class; Daisy’s love and addiction towards ‘gold’ and money; and Tom and Daisy’s lack of respect for their morals by cheating on each other which leads to the tragic downfall of Jay Gatsby.…

However, the symbolism of summer isn’t quite so simple, until it’s contrasted with winter, the last and coldest division of the year, the symbolism becomes clearer. Summer represents liveliness and beauty (i.e. grass, flowers, and attractive scents) and winter represents death. The seasons represent the broader theme of the indisputability of time. And this metaphor shows that nothing can stop summer from turning into winter. What does this tell the reader about time? Perhaps that nothing can stop it?…
