E-LearningFor three years now, Diwa Learning Systems, the country’s leading educational publisher, has been advocating the use of e-learning and has been the partner of schools like Immaculate Heart of Mary of Laguna in providing technology-based learning to students. Its product, called Genyo E-Learning Management Program, has been used to provide students with a more interactive, engaging and multi-media setting.

Parents of students from San Sebastian College-Recoletos appreciate this collaboartion. According to high school principal Cristina Aliwalas, "The parents of our students welcomed the addition of Genyo E-Learning Management Program. We did not increase our tuition fee but we put in an additional fee for our ICT program and they did not complain. We explained to them that this is a small amount to pay in view of the advantage their children will have over other students."

Studies show that students retain 80 percent of what they see, hear, and do simultaneously while they only retain 20 percent of what they see, 30 percent of what they hear, and 50 percent of what they see and hear.

The program has been acknowledged by its current users for its ability to get and retain student’s attention.

Aliwalas believes that it is much better than just using visual aids that the teachers draw. There are movements, so while the teachers are explaining a concept, students can watch.

Sister Glecy Manuyag of Canossa School of Sta.Rosa Laguna says that through this e-learning program, students have renewed enthusiasm in learning and teachers too will have a fun time teaching.

Other schools which have been using Genyo are St. Joseph’s College in Quezon City, Roosevelt College in Cainta, Sta. Teresa College in Bauan, Batangas; Our Lady of Caysasay Academy in Taal, Batangas; La Purisima Concepcion Academy; and San Isidro Catholic School in Pasay City. Colegio de Santa Rosa of Makati City; Canossa School of Sta. Rosa, Laguna; and First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities of Tanauan City, Batangas.

A basic Genyo package includes e-modules in Science and Math, ICT integration management services, network consulting and technical support, teacher training, access to Genyo online and Learning Management System (LMS), a software application used to create, deliver and access content and record, monitor and assess students’ performance.

Diwa also offers upgrades, which include English e-modules, Araling Panlipunan e-modules, Filipino e-modules, LTRLinx e-game and Genyo mobile school, which is an SMS- based learning.

Genyo’s main components – Science, Math, English, Araling Panlipunan and Filipino e-Modules – are versatile audio-visual tools that enable teachers to effectively explain processes. It is equipped with interactive and multi-media components like video and audio clips, colorful graphics, charts and animations, interactive simulations and challenging exercises and quizzes.

Two features are also loaded up with the packages – the LTRLinx and the Mobile School. LTRlinx is a multiplayer word game based on creating anagrams. An anagram is a word spelled out by rearranging the letters of another word. It is a fun way to test one’s vocabulary and general knowledge skills.

The Genyo Mobile School allows students to access information, and schools to broadcast information via SMS. The mobile school entitles the subscriber to access the mDictionary, mThesaurus, Word of The Day, mTutor, mQuiz, Survey, Knowledge Power, School Messenger and Logo and Music downloads.

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand," Confucius said. When students only hear what is being taught in the classroom, they might be confident that they will remember it just because it seems like simple information, some might remember but a majority of them will eventually forget at some point. When the Teacher or lecturer writes information on the board and explains it, more students might have a better chance at remembering the information because it is set at a visual and auditory viewpoint rather than being only limited to an auditory standpoint. But seeing and hearing alone is not enough when it comes to the educational and academic field, students become unstoppable when they are…
