Debate: Television and Opposition Team Members
Good day to our chairperson, judges, the opposition team members, trustworthy timekeeper, and members of the floor.
The house believes that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. TELEVISION is defined as an electronic system of transmitting transient images of fixed or moving objects together with sound over a wire or through space by apparatus that converts light and sound into electrical waves and reconverts them into visible light rays and audible sound
LEADING is defined as coming or ranking first or foremost
CAUSE is defined as a reason for an action or condition
VIOLENCE is defined as an exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse SOCIETY is defined as a voluntary association of individuals for common ends; especially for an organized group working together or periodically meeting because of common interests, beliefs, or profession
As a whole our definition of the topic is, an electronic system is the foremost reason of exertion of physical force in an organized group.
Television. This word associates for us with "violence", "crime", "pornography". And this becomes usual in today's society. And possibly, it is a reason why many people don`t find the cause of violence in TV, because it is usual situation for them, when they see bad scenes on the screen, they just don't pay attention on it. And this is why we became "cold". For us it is violence when bad events happen around us. And we don't notice that slowly turn to monsters. But there is the great impact of television's violence on society.

1 People Tend to Imitate what they have seen on T.V without Awareness or Thinking if it is Wrong or True, Suitable or not!
People sometimes behave like what they see on T.V. Take romantic films to illustrate, they hope to be treated like some characters on film. When they cannot receive that in reality, they become angry or disappointed. This is the root of broken relationship in the real life. Accidentally, people gradually depend more and more on T.V.
Television can be a terrible influence, especially on children. If the television they watch is not controlled children often watch violent and inappropriate programs that they cannot really understand. Due to this children can fight with other children and harm them, without realizing what they are doing simply because they saw it on TV. Watching too much TV can also prevent people from going outside, and socializing which are necessary in life.
Some children watch TV so much that they daydream it anywhere they are, in school or otherwise. Some of them think and talk about programs they've seen when lessons are going on. They develop ideas based on what they've seen on television. My stand is that TV causes distractions, teaching children bad words, cheating, fighting, smoking (yes, when a little boy/girl rolls a paper and acts like a smoker), revenge and other vices. Parents have a lot in their hands to check what they see on TV.
Children copy everything what is happening on the screen, not caring whether it is good or bad. For example, there was experiment with the children. Television researchers split children in two groups. For the first group the clip, where little girl hit a doll, was shown. For the second group the clip, where that girl had a tea party with doll, was shown. After that researchers gave dolls to every group, and every group did the things, which they saw in the video.

Again children saw violence on TV, repeat it, thinking that their action will not be punished. That means they are persuaded that crimes and violence have punishment, despite their terrible consequences.

47% of violent television programs show the victim going unharmed, especially in cartoons.
The person in the cartoon or television show gets bowled over by another character and they get back up without being harmed. Children begin to believe that violence doesn't really hurt others.

73% of individuals who commit crimes in cartoons and children's shows go unpunished in violent scenes. Television shows that allow the character who commits the crime to receive no punishment, teaches children that it is alright to commit a crime because nothing will be done. Criminals and violent acts do not get punished.

And there are certain facts that television promotes homicide. Following the introduction of television into the United States, the annual white homicide rate increased by 93%, from 3.0 homicides per 100 000 white population in 1945 to 5.8 per 100 000 in 1974; in South Africa, where television was banned, the white homicide rate decreased by 7%, from 2.7 homicides per 100 000 white population in 1943 through 1948 to 2.5 per 100 000 in 1974. As with US whites, following the introduction of television into Canada, the Canadian homicide rate increased by 92%, from 1.3 homicides per 100 000 population in 1945 to 2.5 per 100 000 in 1974. White South African homicide rates would double within 10 to 15 years after the introduction of television in 1975, the rate having already increased 56% by 1983.

Well, it can be said that nowadays television is full of acts of murders, robberies, violence. And all of theme, all-in-all, have a huge influence on our consciousness. So, this is beyond controversy that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. Ladies and gentlemen, let me justify my stand that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. 2X

Good day to our chairperson, judges, the opposition team members, trustworthy timekeeper, and members of the floor. The house believes that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. Our second point is….
Television violence causes aggressive behavior in children
What is violence? Do you think that children who watch violence on television will show violent behavior? What about the terrible tragedies in which kids kill other kids, why? Many studies have been done to answer the question of television violence and its effects on children.
Studies have been done by scientists, pediatricians, and child researchers in many countries over the last thirty years. These studies have tried to find out what it is about television violence that makes it such a big influence on the way kids act and behave.

A shocking study by television researchers Bandura and Ross was done to get at the truth about the effects of television violence on children. They split a group of kids into Groups A and B. Next, they showed Group A a videotape of a child acting very aggressively with a doll. For example, the girl in the video hit and kicked the doll. The children in Group B were shown a tape in which the same girl was having a tea party with the same doll. Later in the experiment, they put the Group A kids in a room alone with an exact copy of the doll used in the video. Children in Group A responded by hitting and kicking the doll and acted aggressively. The children in Group B were also put in a room alone with the doll and they played very nicely with it. There are similar studies that show how violence on television increases the likelihood that children who watch will demonstrate aggressive behavior towards others. Children imitate what they see on television.
Our third point is…..
3 Violent television programs show the victim going unharmed, especially in cartoons.
The person in the cartoon or television show gets bowled over by another character and they get back up without being harmed. Children begin to believe that violence doesn’t really hurt others.
As of 1990, the average American child aged 2 to 5 years was watching over 27 hours of television per week.15 This might not be bad, if young children understood what they are watching. However, up through ages 3 and 4 years, many children are unable to distinguish fact from fantasy in television programs and remain unable to do so despite adult coaching.16 In the minds of such young children, television is a source of entirely factual information regarding how the world works. Naturally, as they get older, they come to know better, but the earliest and deepest impressions were laid down when the child saw television as a factual source of information about a world outside their homes where violence is a daily commonplace and the commission of violence is generally powerful, exciting, charismatic, and efficacious. Serious violence is most likely to erupt at moments of severe stress-and it is precisely at such moments that adolescents and adults are most likely to revert to their earliest, most visceral sense of what violence is and what its role is in society. Much of this sense will have come from television.

In 1973, a small Canadian town (called "Notel" by the investigators) acquired television for the first time. The acquisition of television at such a late date was due to problems with signal reception rather than any hostility toward television. Joy investigated the impact of television on this virgin community, using as control groups two similar communities that already had television. In a double-blind research design, a cohort of 45 first- and second-grade students were observed prospectively over a period of 2 years for rates of objectively measured noxious physical aggression (e.g., hitting, shoving, and biting). Rates of physical aggression did not change significantly among children in the two control communities. Two years after the introduction of television, rates of physical aggression among children in Notel had increased by 160% (P<.001).
Our fourth point is…
4 Individuals who commit crimes in cartoons and children's shows go unpunished in violent scenes. Television shows that allow the character who commits the crime to receive no punishment, teaches children that it is alright to commit a crime because nothing will be done. Criminals and violent acts do not get punished.
In a national opinion poll, 43% of adult Americans affirm that television violence "plays a part in making America a violent society," and an additional 37% find the thesis at least plausible (only 16% frankly disbelieve the proposition).
Following the introduction of television into the United States, the annual white homicide rate increased by 93%, from 3.0 homicides per 100 000 white population in 1945 to 5.8 per 100 000 in 1974; in South Africa, where television was banned, the white homicide rate decreased by 7%, from 2.7 homicides per 100 000 white population in 1943 through 1948 to 2.5 per 100 000 in 1974.. Good day to our chairperson, judges, the opposition team members, trustworthy timekeeper, and members of the floor. The house believes that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. Our fifth point is…
5 Television creates heroes out of the people who commit the crimes
Kids feel that if they copy the criminal they will be a hero, too. The hero that commits the crime is glamorized. There is nothing heroic about violence and it is wrong to show kids that it is. Children begin to think of criminals as powerful role models.
What has the world come to these days? It often seems like everywhere one looks, violence rears its ugly head. We see it in the streets, back alleys, school, and even at home. The last of these is a major source of violence. In many peoples' living rooms there sits an outlet for violence that often goes unnoticed. It is the television, and the children who view it are often pulled into its realistic world of violence scenes with sometimes devastating results.
Much research has gone into showing why children are so mesmerized by this big glowing box and the action that takes place within it. Research shows that it is definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. The research proves time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand. The truth about television violence and children has been shown. Some are trying to fight this problem. Others are ignoring it and hoping it will go away. Still others don't even seem to care. However, the facts are undeniable.
The studies have been carried out and all the results point to one conclusion.
Television violence causes children to be violent and the effects can be life- long. IN 1975, Rothenberg's Special Communication in JAMA, "Effect of Television Violence on Children and Youth," first alerted the medical community to the deforming effects the viewing of television violence has on normal child development, increasing levels of physical aggressiveness and violence.1 In response to physicians' concerns sparked by Rothenberg's communication, the 1976 American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates passed Resolution 38: "The House declares TV violence threatens the health and welfare of young Americans, commits itself to remedial actions with interested parties, and encourages opposition to TV programs containing violence and to their sponsors.
Our sixth point is…
Television reduces the value of life.
If Wiley Coyote gets killed, the other cartoon characters don’t care, and they may even laugh. TV makes violence and even death seem funny and unreal. Children do not learn to respect life because violent television reduces the value in them.
The impact of television on children is best understood within the context of normal child development. Neonates are born with an instinctive capacity and desire to imitate adult human behavior. That infants can, and do, imitate an array of adult facial expressions has been demonstrated in neonates as young as a few hours old, i.e., before they are even old enough to know cognitively that they themselves have facial features that correspond with those they are observing. It is a most useful instinct, for the developing child must learn and master a vast repertoire of behavior in short order.
Manifestly, every violent act is the result of an array of forces coming together-poverty, crime, alcohol and drug abuse, stress-of which childhood exposure to television is just one. Nevertheless, the epidemiological evidence indicates that if, hypothetically, television technology had never been developed, there would today be 10 000 fewer homicides each year in the United States, 70 000 fewer rapes, and 700 000 fewer injurious assaults.
Our last point is…
7 Children cannot tell the difference between real and unreal
Television is make-believe. The people in the stories are make-believe. They are actors and the story is not true. Young children are unable to realize that when a character attacks someone it is not real and should not be imitated. Think about it, many young children still believe in the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus. How can children tell the difference between real violence and the make-believe violence done with a script for television? “Many popular cartoon shows have what is called ‘cartoon violence,’ ” “Tom and Jerry are always fighting.”

The information can't be ignored. Violent television viewing does affect children. The effects have been seen in a number of cases. In New York, a 16-year-old boy broke into a cellar. When the police caught him and asked him why he was wearing gloves he replied that he had learned to do so to not leave fingerprints and that he discovered this on television. In Alabama, a nine-year-old boy received a bad report card from his teacher. He suggested sending the teacher poisoned candy as revenge as he had seen on television the night before. Ladies and gentlemen, let me justify my stand that television is the leading cause of violence in today's society. 2X

2 The house believes that the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths.
Good day I bid to the Chairperson, righteous adjudicators, honourable timekeeper, my fellow comrades, doomed adversaries, and members of the floor. I am here today as the Prime Minister of the government bench to construct the debate on the topic the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths. According to Merriam Webster,
Internet is defined as an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world
MORAL is defined as principles of right and wrong in behavior .
Responsible is defined as obligation.
DECADENT is defined as marked by decay or decline
AMONG is defined as in company or association with.
YOUTH is defined the time of life when one is young; especially: the period between childhood and maturity
Thus our definition of the topic is an electronic communications network is obliged to the decline of the principles of right and wrong of the young.

Our first point is…
Internet as a tool for moral decadence
The Internet's definition by wikipedia is a "network of networks". The Internet has brought a lot of good points, but as with any tool, I would like to add that misuse has made the Internet bad. Remember, the Internet is a useful tool, but all that glitters is not gold. Firstly, the Internet is a place which is NOT safe for children. This is basically because of threats of pop-ups, pornography and scams that can trick the child. The Internet is not only an unsafe place for children, but also a bad influence to young teenagers. Pornography from the Internet is leading to the rise of a society of perverts, paedophiles and freaks, who are unable to contain their sexual desires. The number of rape cases this year in Malaysia alone has shocked officials and even the Prime Minister.

Teenagers are the group targeted by the Internet. 28% of teenagers globally watch pornography. This might be a minority of people, but the way Internet has affected us in such a way is shocking. The bad effect on the younger generation, our future leaders, is undeniable. Do keep in mind that the presence of "net-nannies" and safesearch programs does not deter our children as 20% of the so called "bad" side of the Internet is overlooked by safe search programs. However, 10% of non-harmful content such as "breast cancer" on the internet is filtered by the safesearches used to deter pornography.

Clearly, we are unable to thwart the attempts of people to find what they want, as these days, even young children are IT educated and can build and dismantle firewalls with ease, as their parents struggle to build them to protect them. Pornographers have been going in overdrive due to the availability of the Internet, and it is used to spread the word of their porn sites. Following statistics by both secular and religious bodies, pornography is now more American than apple pie!

2006 and 2005 statistics show that the US porn revenue earns more than the top companies (Google, Yahoo, Microsoft,Amazon,eBay,Apple,Netflix and Earthlink put together! Ladies and gentlemen, let me justify our stand that that the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths. 2X. With that, I rest my case.

Good day I bid to the Chairperson, righteous adjudicators, honourable timekeeper, my fellow comrades, doomed adversaries, and members of the floor. I am here today as the Second Minister of the government bench to construct the debate on the topic the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths.
Our second point is…
There is a lot of false information in the internet.
The internet has become a major source of information for many people. However, online information has usually not gone through the same checks as newspaper articles or books. There is a higher risk that some of the facts or quotations from a particular source in an article are false. Whereas newspapers might lose customers if people find out they gave been ‘selling lies’, a blog can be easily deleted. If people base their opinions on information they find online, they could well be basing their opinion on false facts. Since the internet gives equal space to material of greatly varying quality, this is a serious risk.
There are a lot of lies and half truths being spread by the internet. People often believe these lies simply because they see them on a web page, so they think they must be true. This is specially bad for children – they do not have enough experience to know what is right and wrong

Our third point is…
Internet addiction
Many people are just addicted to the internet. They can’t stop browsing, they are hooked on gaming and they spend too much time indoors. Instead of going out for a walk or play outside, they sit behind their computers for hours. A sad consequence of the addiction is that they are so used to high speed information by just clicking on the next link that they can no longer appreciate a good book, or a nice conversation with a friend. By failing to take exercise they grow fat and unhealthy. Their family life suffers and their only relationships are online – they can’t cope in the real world.
Overabundance of answers is reducing our intellect: In the era of cheap oil, cars are inefficient. In the era of easy answers, we get intellectually lazy. Overwhelmed with information, so unable to process or assess. Lazy in judgment, thus end up making bad decisions that could be stupid. We have more answers than ever before, which is different from the ability to derive or manufacture these answers’
Nicholas Carr in his book The Shallows: How the Internet is Changing the Way we Think, Read and Remember, that all this time spend online cannot be healthy. Research in the UK has shown that the average adult spends around 22 hours 15 minutes online each month. It is believed that the Internet is dominating the lives of its users.
Our fourth point is
Everyone’s privacy is greatly harmed by the internet.
Everyone’s privacy is greatly harmed by the internet. We can quickly see what politicians and celebrities are doing when the paparazzi posts news pictures online, but people can also see what we’ve been doing. Some sites store information. Some ask us to fill in information which can be sold to other sites for commercial purposes. Once we post something online, it is almost impossible to erase it from the net. For example, if I break up with a person, they can take revenge and post embarrassing photos of me online. There have been numerous court cases where a woman demanded that her ex remove some privately taken photos from a dating site, so that she would be left alone. Unfortunately, the law cannot protect your right to privacy in this area. ! Ladies and gentlemen, let me justify our stand that that the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths. 2X. With that, I rest my case.

(SAILENDRA)
Good day I bid to the Chairperson, righteous adjudicators, honourable timekeeper, my fellow comrades, doomed adversaries, and members of the floor. I am here today as the Third Minister of the government bench to construct the debate on the topic the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths.
Our fifth point is..
You can choose any identity you want when you are online.
You can choose any identity you want when you are online. Many people hide behind profiles they have made up. They start making nasty remarks on public forums or chat rooms. They would never have normally said these things, but because they can hide behind an identity they start upsetting and hurting others. Even though other people can try to stop them from this behaviour, their warnings are not as effective as a warning from someone you know very well, like a friend, a parent or a teacher. The internet’s anonymity allows them to show sides of themselves that, for good reasons, they normally wouldn’t have shown. This increases the risk that, because they get away with it online, they show similar behaviour in their real life. This harms everyone.
Our sixth point is… Increased Level of Distraction
With the arrival of the Internet, humans have developed the perfect medium for distraction: Video here, link there, oops! A tweet, growl coming up with mail
Internet induces constant distractions and interruptions that prevent decision-making and turn people into scattered and superficial thinkers. People get BORED because they are lazy in judgment and creativity due to info overload, thus no new info is created. The more information you have, the more easy answers you have, the less intellectually challenged you will be. This leads to boredom. Instead of getting inspired to create, we get bored
Our last point is…..
Children can see bad images in the internet.
A CHURCH elder in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (SDA) in Nakonde district in Northern Province says exposure to internet has contributed greatly to the moral decay among the youths in the border town. Elder Musukwa said the continued exposure of the youths to the internet and has contributed to the unbecoming behaviour of the youths who always want to experiment what they see on internet. There is need to regulate what information or material is exposed to the youths so as to have decent youths who would grow up into responsible citizens of the country.
Internet causes moral decadence because many people now days spend a lot of time in looking or involving in issues such as seeing bad images in the internet and play video games which is unethical. Issues such as rape, and smooking marijuana are imitated by youth from what they see via internet. Ladies and gentlemen, let me justify our stand that that the internet is responsible for the moral decadence among the youths. 2X. With that, I rest my case.

Everyone is influenced and shaped by society. Society affects our perceptions, our consciousness, and our actions. A majority of the influence, especially on the younger demographic comes through the media; specifically through television. It is important to examine how violence in the media develops a pervasive cultural environment that cultivates a heightened state of insecurity, exaggerated perceptions of risk and danger, and a fear-driven propensity for hard-line political solutions to social problems. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the impact of television and media violence, as well as the human cost of violent media, and the overall effects on society from watching TV.…

Violence. The very word demands immediate attention as our minds turn to what we already know of it. To relate it back to what we’ve seen or heard and recall our own experiences with it; or perhaps we relay tales of violence and pass those on to others. The majority of what we understand regarding violence stems from what we see and hear through media reports, television programmes, film and theatre. To emotionally connect or distance ourselves from what we know is often expressed through our initial emotional and physical reactions or responses. In contemporary society a week does not go by when we are not presented with a new incident involving some act of violence, whether we openly notice it or not. Violence is an everyday occurrence; a fact which, is normally out of the control of the average person. Thus to commence breaking down what violence is in a definition of terms – the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines it as:…

While it is not the first medium ever to reproduce violence for entertainment, television has certainly been the most notorious. However, television stations "do not air violence because they want to. They air it because that is what sells. The blame is upon ourselves for the large volume of violence, since they are merely responding to what we want" (Kim). This love for violence has filtered into nearly every television show aired currently. Virtually every television station airs shows, either live action or animated, that involve the characters fighting, arguing, or just acting in a malevolent way towards something or somebody else. The news always carries stories of what crimes have been committed during the day, daytime talk shows and soap operas often involve fighting and conflict, and even children's television is starting to take a more serious,…
