Dear Abby - Great Gatsby
Mark Anthony Urdaneta Advise Column #1

Dear Abby, I met this lady named Daisy Buchanan that has the aura of luxury, grace and charm but I lied to her about my own background. Lately I have been feeling lost, out of place and lonely at my home in West Egg. For the last few years I feel as if I have been missing a piece of me, piece that I lost long ago and have yearned forever since. Before I moved to New York I knew a woman, let's call her "Daisy". She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I thought I would spend the rest of my life with; unfortunately I needed to put my love for "Daisy" on hold and fight for my country over in Europe. After I returned I soon found out that I lost "Daisy" to another man. In an effort to get her attention I've hosted magnificent parties, yet I have not been able to coax her back to me. Frankly, it's like I don't even exist to her. I have everything that a man could ever want like a luxurious car, a mansion and everlasting wealth. Yet, every time I lay down at night I feel as if I wasted another day of my life being lonely. Dear Abby can you please give me some advice to get "Daisy" Back?

–Heartbroken

Dear Heartbroken,

It seems like this void in your life has been there for some time now. If you truly want "Daisy" then you need to go get her, like a real man. Women want to be swept off their feet by a man on a white horse, you have to show initiative. I'd suggest having a mutual friend possibly set you two up through coffee, tea or brunch. Be careful though, you could easily get yourself into trouble with "Daisy's" current man. Guys usually don't take too kindly to another man stealing their woman. Going for "Daisy" will create a fierce competition between you two. Hopefully you will be wise to these words and no get yourself killed. I hope you will find my suggestions beneficial to your quest for love! -Abby

Money is the top priority in Daisy’s life. “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool-that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (22). Here she suggests that women need to be foolish in that era, which is cruel to women and requires women to be just satisfied with money, which is the only thing can prove them and give them happiness. So for money, Daisy chooses being a fool and accepts her fate to marry Tom. In the town’s meeting, Daisy claims that she loves Gatsby now but she loves Tom once too (126). Gatsby has money now not in the past. Daisy completely tells everyone everything she cares is…

Trying to get back together with someone is a bad idea, especially if they are married. However, in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby loved a woman, Daisy, when he had to go to war he thought that Daisy would be waiting for him once he got back. That was not the case, he learned that Daisy had married the rich and powerful Tom Buchanan. He knew that he would have to earn a lot of money to be able to win her back. He had met a man named Dan Cody before the war and was his steward for a few years. Dan was very successful and gave Gatsby the motivation he needed to start earning money. Once Gatsby got enough money, he “bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (78) on East Egg. Gatsby had everything he needed to win Daisy back. However, he was…

Daisy, I heard you have a husband now. That means nothing to me. I will have nothing else but you in my arms. I wish we could be together forever. However, I know that this will never happen as long as you are still married to Tom. He is keeping you away from me and our relationship will never be what we wish it to be, as long as he is in your life. Daisy, I wish there was a gentler way of saying this. You really need to leave Tom.…

The four settings in the Great Gatsby can changes the image on the overall plot. Each one of them makes a different tone and enhances the image of the story line. East and West Egg are both wealthy places but, since they are located on opposite sides, their ideals are different. The Valley of Ashes is what everybody looks at as a burned out Hell. Manhattan would be best described as the purgatory on earth. These settings represent the distance between the classes in this time period, from the wealthy class of the East and West “eggs”, the desolate “valley of ashes”, to the chaos of “Manhattan.”…

The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald is a critique of American prosperity, and the endless drive for wealth brought on by the economic growth against the background of Long Island, New York City. The Great Gatsby critiques materialism and the new American Dream, no longer defined by prosperity for equality, but by prosperity for the goal of excess wealth. Nick Carraway, the protagonist, views Jay Gatsby’s disillusionment about Daisy Buchanan, the object of his affection. The tale is not a story about past lovers, but instead represents a cast of characters chasing the American Dream which destroys them. The theme suggests that Americans have created a second form of aristocracy that the original founding fathers tried to escape. Each character…

Can chasing an ideal blind us and prevent us from seeing the truth? Sometimes ideals can become such a big driving force in our life that they cause us to overlook the truth and ignore reality. Reality and ideals are contrasted through the goals in life of the characters Nick, Gatsby, and Daisy. Through contrasting ideals and the reality of a situation, F.Scott Fitzgerald suggests that chasing an ideal without recognizing the truth will not allow an individual to attain their goal because reality is needed to see the possibility of one’s dream.…

magine the 1920's have been reenacted, a time of swinging parties and when things just did not seem to matter as much as they do now. This may not seem as hard as it sounds. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, paints a picture of what the time period was like. It was a time known as the "Jazz Age", where the economy was on an upswing and money was easy to be had. Prohibition was in affect, and bootlegging was a highly lucrative but shady business venture. Jay Gatsby most likely took part in bootlegging, which is how he accumulated his vast amount of money. Tom Buchanan on the other hand, acquired his wealthy status, by inheritance. He did not earn his money, but his family gave it to him. Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby each differ extremely much so on many views and situations that each of them came upon over the course of the novel.…

Contrary to Gatsby’s idealized view, Daisy is a self-centered girl. When Gatsby was called off to war, she was not worried about him but rather about herself. She just “wanted her life shaped now, immediately – and the decision must be made by some force – of love, of money, of unquestionable practicality – that was close at hand” (151). She needed a constant right next to her, and he came in the form of a brute, Tom Buchanan. She had married him not out of love but for financial security. He, in addition, had to be someone who matched her social standing. Years later, Gatsby returned and everything had already changed. Yet he didn’t notice that Daisy is not the right woman for him. He helped her once again, and loses his life because of it. Daisy had accidentally run over a deranged Myrtle Wilson on her way home. Gatsby couldn’t stand the thought of Daisy going to jail and took the blame for it. However, Daisy doesn’t care to attend Gatsby’s funeral, or even “send a message or flower” (174). “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy, - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back to their vast carelessness” (179). If Daisy loved Gatsby, it was a superficial love, for she never did anything for him.…

Daisy in the earlier part of her life, was attracted to Gatsby. She eventually decided to leave him, because he didn’t have enough money to please her. However, after she met Gatsby again, she wanted to leave her husband because of the great wealth Gatsby had achieved. As Harold Bloom mentioned in his article, “Daisy is impressed with the things Gatsby has amassed” (Bloom). Daisy’s hesitation on whether she loved Gatsby or Tom more led her to be unhappy, which eventually ended with her killing Myrtle. Like Gatsby, her pursuit of wealth led to her ruin and the ruin…
