Data Communications
Introduction
Data communications (Datacom) is the engineering discipline concerned with communication between the computers. It is defined as a subset of telecommunication involving the transmission of data to and from computers and components of computer systems. More specifically data communication is transmitted via mediums such as wires, coaxial cables, fiber optics, or radiated electromagnetic waves such as broadcast radio, infrared light, microwaves, and satellites.
Data Communications = Movement of computer information by means of electrical or optical transmission systems
Information can be represented using analog signals
Analog signals cannot be manipulated easily
Analog signals must be digitized for computer processing
They must also be presented in binary form for computer processing

Figure1.1 Data Transmission Using Analog Technology

Unit of information: A byte consists of 8 bits that is treated as a unit or character.
The bandwidth is a property of a medium: It is the difference between the highest and the lowest frequencies that the medium can satisfactorily pass. The analog bandwidth of a medium is expressed in hertz; the digital bandwidth, in bits per second.

Signals: Analog or digital Signals can be analog or digital. Analog signals can have an infinite number of values in a range; digital signals can have only a limited number of values.
Analog signal has infinitely many levels of intensity (infinitely many values, continuous values) over a period of time.
Digital signal has only a limited number of defined values (discrete values) say, 0,1.

Phase: It describes the position of the waveform relative to time zero.

Transmission Medium
A signal needs to pass through a transmission medium. A transmission medium may pass some frequencies, may block few and weaken others.

Signal spectrum – a transmission contains lack of high frequency components which means less bandwidth is required and direct current component is also desirable. With no dc component, ‘ac’ coupling via transformer is possible. Finally, the magnitude of the effects of signal distortion and interference depend on the spectral properties of the transmitted signal.…

There are so many new devices that allow the analog to digital, and digital to analog communication. These devices are needed to make the signal proper and allow for no noise on the line. This is what we call signal to noise ratio. Some of the hardware needed is some basic things, a modem is needed at a home or business, this turns analog to digital and vice versa. There is also components called DAC which means a digital to analog converter along with a ADC, which stands for analog to digital converter. These devices are needed to ensure the right signal and clear as well. The main thing digital signal uses are the binary code which is…

In order for this conversion to take place, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is necessary. This component is essential because it is responsible for receiving the analog signal as input and sending a digital signal as output. The ADC receives an analog signal such as sound, voice, or voltage and transforms that signal into a binary output. This output is the digital signal that has a state of either on, which is represented by 1 or an off state represented by 0. ADC is used in more occasions than people think. For example, whenever music is transmitted through the radio, the signal is sent in as analog and then through ADC changed into digital. Another example is the use of phones. Voice is analog, so a conversion needs to take place at the switch to convert it into digital. Analog is an older technology that is still widely used, so it is important to know how to convert it.…
