PROJECT PROFILE

INTRODUCTION The project entitled INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM USING BARCODE is a software developed for established RETAILERS AND VENORS. It will have the entire basic module to manage the show room operations.

What is Barcode?
A Barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data relating to the object to which it is attached. Originally barcodes systematically represents data by varying the widths and spacing of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or one dimensional (1D)
Later they evolved into rectangles, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns in two dimensions (2D). Barcodes originally were scanned by special optical scanners called barcode readers.
Later, scanners and interpretive software became available on devices like desktop printers and smartphones.

One Dimensional Two Dimensional

PHENAMENON:
Barcode Systems provides various benefits which became the motivational point for choosing a project which can manipulate this technology in developing a software solution for systems involving its use.
We shall develop a software solution which shall be based in the following stages:
Barcode Generation
Barcode Scanning
In both the stages the data movement and storage shall be maintained in a database whose manipulation shall be done with each instance of these stages which means that whenever a barcode for a particular product shall be generated, a data entry pertaining to that product in the database shall be made automatically.
Similarly whenever any manipulation is done to the product or its barcode, the database records shall be change accordingly.

The database environment refers to the type of configuration used to populate and create the application. A database includes items such as text, images and graphics associated with a record. The main purpose of a database is to collect and organize that data. The environment to be designed is one to store and retrieve data in a way it can be easily organized. For the purpose of this assignment the database environment will be a series of tables which store customer, sales order, purchase order and various status point information. This data will then be used for a series of reports to demonstrate status of the purchase order as it flows through the system. The overall goal is to be able to provide the customer an accurate status of their purchase order that is submitted electronically.…

The database environment refers to the kind of structure used to establish and create the application. The mutual definitions for database items contain data which is the facts, text, images and graphics related to a record. A database is a way to assemble and arrange that data. The environment to be considered is one to collect and recover data in a way it can be easily structured. For the principle idea of this assignment the database environment will be a progression of tables which sales order, store customer, purchase order and various status point information. This data will then be used for a progression of reports to determine status of the purchase order as it runs through the system. The principle goal is by customer provide a precise status of a purchase order that is submitted electronically.…

Quick Response codes, or QR codes, were developed by an automobile parts manufacturer in the 90's to track its parts. (Denso Wave Incorporated, 2010). They differ from regular bar codes in that they can represent up to over 4,000 alphanumeric characters as compared to only 20 numbers of the standard bar code. This allows the QR code to pack quite a punch in information for today's hi-tech computer junkies. So what does that mean to you and me? Bar codes are only lines that represent numbers. It has to be read in a very specific way in order for it to be read correctly. They also need to be created by a piece of software that needs to be purchased and read with a scanner. That makes them very limited in their use and difficult for the everyday user to create. Enter the QR code.…

Information stored in a mass storage system is conceptually grouped into large units called files. A typical file may consist of a complete text document, a photograph, a program, a music recording, or a collection of data about the employees in a company. Mass storage devices dictate that these files be stored and retrieved in smaller, multiple byte units. For example, a file stored on a magnetic disk must be manipulated by sectors, each of which is a fixed predetermined size. A block of data conforming to the specific characteristics of a storage device is called a physical record. Thus, a large file stored in mass storage will typically consist of many physical records. In contrast to this division into physical records, a file often has natural divisions determined by the information represented. For example, a file containing information regarding a company’s employees would consist of multiple units, each consisting of the information about one employee. Or, a file containing a text document would consist of paragraphs or pages. These naturally occurring blocks of data are called logical records. Logical records often consist of smaller units called fields. For example, a logical record containing information about an employee would probably consist of fields such as name, address, employee identification number, etc. Sometimes each logical record within a file is uniquely identified by means of a particular field within the record (perhaps an employee’s identification number, a part number, or a catalogue item number). Such an identifying field is called a key field. The value held in a key field is called a key.…

A bar code is a series of alternating dark and light stripes that are read by an optical scanner. The organization and width of the lines is determined by the bar code protocol selected. A barcode system is a network of hardware and software, consisting primarily of mobile computers, printers, handheld scanners, infrastructure, and supporting software. Barcode systems are used to automate data collection where hand recording is neither timely nor cost effective. Bar coding systems are not radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems even though the companies that provide barcode equipment will often also provide RFID equipment and many companies use both technologies as part of larger resource management systems.…

The origin of this IPRO comes from the necessity of the company of tracking the items from start to finish. Due to the nature of the products, they have to pass several quality tests, and it is also important to keep track of which tests have been passed and which ones have not. Nowadays, all the products have a part number and a bar-code, provided by SAP. The part number contains information of the type of PC Board and frequency to be used. The barcode is not being used at all. It is not read. It doesn’t mean anything. They have been able to work like this for a long time, but with the growth of the company, the problem grows, and a solution is needed. The managers of Shure® came up with the proposal that the implementation of a bar-code would be the best solution. So, even though the group knew that there were other…

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Preamble As part of the requirements for the award of the Higher National Diploma, H.N.D, each student is required to prepare a Project Work in his or her chosen field of study. The study must be original and must be the results of independent work of the student. In the light of this, the student has chosen to write on the topic: Developing a coding and location system; a case study of St Michael’s Catholic Hospital. 1.2 Research Background In a typical store house, there is the need for pragmatic and strategic considerations to be taken with regards to the development of a coding and location system. These two functions play a very important role as far as stores operations are concerned. 1.2.1 Definition of Coding According to Carter, and Price (1993), coding is a “system developed that can identify and classify the range of items held in stock, quickly, and effectively”¹. On the other hand, Baily (1963) defines coding as a “short description, combining complexity of references with brevity of codeword, thus saving time in processing transactions and saving space in records”². On his part, Westering Gosta (1984) defines coding as “the procedure for allocating symbolic identification marks to different items to simplify their definition and retrieval”³.…
